Kiwanis Bulletin

March 13, 2008

On this Thursday, our greeters were Jessica Miracle and Steve Thompson and we were warmly welcomed on this cool spring day.  Dennis Durmas conducted our meeting this week due to President Kristin’s absence and Dennis opened by welcoming all Kiwanians and their guests.  As we sang “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” we were led by Rich Emerson and Jeannie Thomas was again at the piano.  Bill Byers delivered our invocation and as Rick Tuma attempted our Defining Statement, Bill Byers stepped in again and beautifully recited the statement.  Bill received the $5.00 for this.  Thank you all for your contributions to our meeting.

Greg Schaefer introduced Cassidy, Barbara Salogga and Sally Schaefer as his guests this week.  Henry Langstaff introduced a lifelong friend, Wayne Wright, as his guest.  Deanna Colaizzi introduced her daughter, Kianna as her guest; John Hildebrand introduced Jeremiah Hines and Dennis Durmas introduced his mom, Lois Durmas and coworker, Julie as his guests.

Shaunalee Wall passed out invitations to address for our Membership Drive and luncheon on March 27th.  Rick Nisley talked about our website information.  He asked everyone to check their information and if any changes need to be made please let Rick know. Dennis Durmas is in search for his bell.  There will be a $50.00 fine imposed on the “taker” of the bell.

The birthday club members this week are Dennis Durmas- March 10th, Blaine Scott- March 13th and Mike Kelly- March 17th.  Happy Birthday Everyone!!!

Happy Bucks were paid this week by Steve Thompson, Christi Adams, Larry Beckner, Kianna Colaizzi, Jessica Miracle, Jon Wickre, LeAnn Zetmeir, Dennis Durmas and Rick Nisley.

Fines were imposed, by Dennis Durmas, on Rick Nisley, Vikki Bell and Steve Thompson.

Our program this week was introduced by Vern Gray.  Vern introduced Greg Schaefer who then introduced Sally Schaefer.  Sally is not only the CEO of Hilltop Resources; she is the wife of Greg.  Sally spoke about the proposed recreation center in the Grand Valley. This $28 Million project would be located near the Botanical Gardens in Grand Junction. The recreation center would include tennis courts, amphitheater, event hall, multi-use recreation, social and program areas, gymnasium, indoor pool, outdoor aquatics area, water play park and boat/bike rental.  Sally hopes to raise the money for this project through public and private partnerships and hopes to avoid asking the voters of Mesa County for a sales tax increase.  The ground breaking, hopefully, will happen by next summer.

Dennis Durmas spoke about the need for Chair and Vice-Chairs for Pancake Day. Please see Dennis if you can help.  Bob Colony talked about Corporate Sales and introduced Katie Ames and John Hildebrand as committee members.  A goal of $60,000 has been set for this year with $45,000 coming from Corporate Sponsors. Remember, Pancake Day is June 13th!!!

Dave Kearsley delivered the “Joke of the Day” and it was a great one. Mike Kelly won the raffle this week and received $48.00. Vikki Bell announced this month’s FAC at Bubs’ Pub on Horizon Drive and there is another Ski Day on Friday, March 14th.

As Lynn Sorlye delivered our “Thought of the Day” our meeting this week wrapped up.  Dennis adjourned our meeting at about 1:20.

Until next week…..Roxie Denning, Bulletin Editor
