Kiwanis Bulletin

September 6, 2007

It was another gorgeous day in Grand Junction and our greeters, Ron Sherman and Lloyd Unfred were at the front door with open arms and warm smiles.  President Wes opened our meeting by greeting members and their guests.  We were led by Terry Wakefield as we sang “This Land is Your Land” and our invocation was delivered by Orville Boge.  Our defining statement was recited by Dave Harris.  Thank you all for your contribution to our meeting.

Tony Colaizzi introduced Sandy Hillard as his guest, Sandy Barger was with Tom Harmon as her guest, Paul Miller returned with Doug Carpenter (induction soon!!), Bill Byers brought Ken Henry and his son Bryce Byers as his guests and to wrap it all up Mike Moran introduced Con Pyle as his guest.

President - Elect Kristin Winn announced that on Thursday, October 4th our weekly meeting will take place at the Whitman School on 4th Street due to the fact that Two Rivers Convention Center is not available. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS IMPORTANT CHANGE!!!  Kristin also stated that there were Annual Club Assessment sheets on the tables that she would like to have completed and returned to her at the end of our meeting.

Happy J Bucks were paid by Rick Adleman, Orville Boge, Toni Heiden-Moran, Kristin Winn, Ron Sherman for Kevin Price, Rick Tuma and Rick Nisley.  Fine Master Ron Sherman delivered the blows this week.  Those fined  were Wes D’Aponti, Chris Gumone, Steve Thompson, Alan Watkins, Roxie Denning, Brad Krebill, (something about advertising for the last three), Omar Campos, Greg Schafer, Larry Beckner, Mike Pentaky and Rick Tuma.

The Birthday Club members this week were Bob Burger, Brad Krebill, Fred Aldrich and Bill Kistler.  Happy Day, Guys!!

Mailyn D’Aponti spoke in great detail about the Safety Walk that our club works with each year.  Due to the commitments and responsibilities that Mailyn will have next year she will step down as the Chairperson of this event.  Mailyn needs a new chair and is asking for someone to help. Please see Mailyn as soon as possible.  The slide show that Mailyn presented was outstanding and gave a lot of details of what happens during the Safety Walk.

Rick Nisley spoke about Oktoberfest and some changes that will take place this year.  We will add turkey legs and ice cream cups to our menu of brats.  Sign up sheets will be on the tables next week.  Rick will need help from a co-chair person so please see Rick if you are interested.

Chris Gumone presented a $1,000.00 check form Wal-Mart to our club for Kamp Kiwanis.  Kamp Kiwanis will close September 28th-October 1st

Wes announced that Allocation day is set for September 20th and the installation of our new officers is September 27th

Gifts to our president were presented by Greg Schafer and Jim Moore.  Both of these gentlemen went to Alaska on fishing trips (keep in mind that it was not at the same time).  Greg returned with an Alaskan Bear Survival Kit and a bar of soap with moose poop in the middle.  Jim returned with a fly for President Wes.  Jim asked Wes to identify the fly and without a moment’s hesitation he was able to name the fly.

Deanna Colaizzi introduced Sandy Miller from the Gray Gourmet.  This is a program sponsored by St. Mary’s Hospital that provides hot, delicious, nutritious lunches to Seniors.  The meals can be delivered to the Senior or they can come to one of the dining rooms for lunch.  The suggested donation per meal is $2.50 for Seniors and $5.00 for those under age 60.  There are volunteer opportunities and if you are interested please call 243-9844 ext. 2.

Our Thought for the Day was delivered by Chris Gumone and we were adjourned by President Wes D’Aponti.

Until next time…..Roxie Denning, Bulletin Editor
