Kiwanis Bulletin

August 30, 2007

I will start, this week, by sending my thanks to Henry Langstaff for helping me with notes of our meeting for the bulletin.  Did anyone notice that I wasn’t in attendance on Thursday?

Our greeters were Amy Dyer (assisted by her grandson, Henry Hanna) and Vern Gray; I am sure that they were a dynamic trio.  Governor-elect Rich Emerson led us as we sang “This is my Country”, Stephanie Tuin delivered the invocation and our defining statement was recited by KristinWinn.  Thank you all for your contribution.

President Wes opened the meeting by welcoming members and their guests.  This week Amy Dyer’s guests were her grandsons Ari and Henry Hanna and her daughter Kayenna Hanna. Lt. Governor Mike Doring introduced a large contingent from the Golden K club. Mike Kelly brought his wife, Michelle and Steve Thompson was accompanied by his father Dick Thompson.

Happy Bucks were paid by Don Teets, Mailyn D’Aponti, Rick Nisley, Jeff Harris, Larry Beckner, Orville Boge and Mike Doring.  KristinWinn announced that she heard from Mark Relph.  He has joined a Rotary Club due to the fact that there isn’t a Kiwanis Club in town.

Our speaker this week was Rusty Lloyd from the Western Colorado Conservation Corp. He presented a slide show and spoke about the work that they do with young people to train them in life skills. They are both academic and career oriented.

The celebrated birthdays this week were for Kristi Porter and Eric Lusby; I thought these individuals had dropped out of our club.  Please correct me if I am wrong.  Our Thought for the Day was delivered by Vern Gray. He said that some day maybe people will be able to put away their fears and prejudices and laugh at each other.  The joke of the day was delivered by Wes D’Aponti.  Mike Kelly had a floor mat honoring Kiwanis. David Livingston said that there was a very successful year at Camp Kiwanis. They will close the camp on September 30th or October 1st.  We will still hope to have a meeting up there before then.  The installation of new officers will be on September 27th, Allocation Thursday will be September 20th and Oktoberfest will be October 6th.  Sign up sheets will be on our tables next week.

Steve Thompson acted as Fine Master this week.  He began by having several members read a proclamation telling how he had done as Fine Master in the past.  He ended up fining himself $20.00.  Others that were fined were Rick Nisley, Kristin Winn and Ron Sherman.

Gifts for President Wes were given by Ken Willard who went to Reno Nevada.  He took all of the goodies from the room he stayed in including a sewing kit and a gift certificate to be used at the casino and numerous other small treasures.  Jeff Harris recently went on a cruise to Alaska and brought a set of swizzle sticks for President Wes. Rick Nisley went to Denver and returned with round disks (coins) made in Denver of U.S. Presidents. Jeff Cyriacks returned from Alaska with mementos form the Anchorage Kiwanis Club. The Golden K Club represented by Mike Doring was presented a check for $10,900.00 as their share of money raised from Pancake Day.  Jeannie Thomas has symphony information for those that are interested.

Terry Wakefield announced the allocations committee met and have $40,000.00 to give out.  He said that 24 applicants were received asking for a total of $53,000.00. The final decisions will be made by committee prior to September 20th.

That’s it for now.  I hope that everyone has a safe Labor Day weekend.

Until next week…..Roxie Denning, Bulletin Editor
