With smiling faces,
we were warmly
greeted by Steve
Katz and Rick Tuma
and at 12:20 our
meeting was opened
by Wes D’Aponti as
he welcomed guests
and members. We sang
“God Bless America”
and we were led by
Terry Wakefield.
Orville Boge
delivered our
invocation.
There were several
guests this week.
Mark Relph brought
his wife Jodi,
Kristi Adams brought
Kellie Korvan, and
Jim Corley brought
two guests this
week, Alan Watkins
and Jan Winkler.
Jeff Freeland also
brought two guests,
Heather Smith and
Leslie Nelson.
Roxie Denning
brought David Harris
and Orville Petersen
brought Jessica
Miracle.
Our infamous Fine
Master Ron Sherman
was in charge of
fines this week. He
had quite a list and
some of the fines
will happen at a
later day due to the
fact that the
Kiwanian was not in
attendance on this
particular
Thursday. Those
fined were Toni
Heiden-Moran,
Orville Boge,
Orville Petersen,
Rick Nisley, Pete
Jouflas, Jeff
Gumone, Vikki Bell,
Fred Nichols, Jim
Corley, Pete Baier,
Ron Lappi and Mark
Relph. Mark was
fined 50 cents to
remember us after he
leaves Grand
Junction.
Wes D’Aponti
delivered his
One-Minute Education
Spot: Until 1962,
Kiwanis clubs were
located within the
United States and
Canada. After 40
years of debate,
club delegates of
the 1961
International
Convention in
Toronto, Ontario,
approved the
extension of Kiwanis
to the rest of the
world. In April
1962, the Kiwanis
Club or Tijuana,
Baja California,
Mexico, became the
first club to be
organized outside of
the two founding
nations. Today,
Kiwanis clubs are
active in more than
75 nations.
This week Lowell
Shormann and Rick
Nisley celebrated
birthdays and happy
bucks were
plentiful. They
were paid by Henry
Langstaff, Wes
D’Aponti, Rick
Nisley, Orville Boge,
Tom Sheldon,
Mark Relph, Kristin
Winn, Jeanne Thomas
and Rick Tuma.
Thank you all for
being such Happy
Kiwanians.
President Wes
received gifts this
week from Shaunalee
Wall and Daryl Pridy.
Shaunalee and Daryl
went to Central
America and returned
with a wooden fish
for Wes. Pete Baier
visited Hawaii and
returned with some
nuts, a “hang-loose
beer opener and a
Tiki Man of Wisdom
for our President.
Wes was grateful for
all of the
thoughtful gifts.
Wes announced that
Les Goodding is at
Community Hospital.
Les fell and broke
his leg and everyone
wished Les a full
and speedy
recovery. A card
was passed around at
lunch for all of us
to sign.
This particular
Thursday was Mark
Relph’s last lunch
with our club. Mark
and Jodi are moving
to Washington State
to go on to bigger
and better
opportunities for
Mark. Rick Nisley
presented Mark with
a “Soaring Eagle”
from the Grand
Junction Kiwanis
Club and a framed
memento of the beer
that was named for
him a couple of
years ago. When Mark
was asked how he
dealt with the
stress of his job in
Grand Junction he
said that his secret
was that he never
watched television
or read the paper;
therefore no
stress!! We all
wish Mark and his
family the very best
as they begin their
new life in
Washington; he will
be missed.
Lloyd Unfred
introduced our
program this week.
We were serenaded by
the Bookcliff
Barbershop Chorus.
Dave Woodward and
Dennis Kiefer spoke
about their
involvement with the
125th
Grand Junction
Celebration later
this year and the
Singing Valentines
that can be
delivered to your
Sweetheart on
February 13th
or 14th.
There were sheets on
the tables for this
but if you have any
questions, please
let Lloyd know.
The chorus sang
“This Little Light
of Mine”, “Sitting
on Top of the
World”, “Paper
Moon”, ”Let me call
you Sweetheart” and
“Grand Junction, My
Home Town”. It was a
great show and our
thanks go to Lloyd
for his great
program.
Don Teets held a
Member Orientation
last Wednesday
evening. Those in
attendance were new
members Benjamin,
Alan Watkins and
Heather Smith and
sponsor Randy
Kirschbaum. Thank
you all for your
participation in
this great
opportunity.
Shaunalee Wall spoke
about this year’s
Membership Drive
that will begin on
March 1st.
Each Kiwanian was
given an Invitation
List and they should
bring the names,
phone numbers and
addresses to our
February 15th
meeting. The names
on this list are
individuals that you
believe would be a
great addition to
our membership. If
you have questions,
please contact
