Kiwanis Bulletin

January 25, 2007

It was a beautiful day on Thursday and the Kiwanis Club was in full swing.  The greeters were Roxie Denning and Ken Willard.  Thank you, Ken, for standing in for Brook Blaney.  Kristin Winn delivered our invocation and Betsy Madden gave our Defining Statement.

Our plates were full this week and Wes began our meeting earlier than usual.  Wes welcomed the members and our guests and reminded us of this month’s focus.  Wes introduced Mailyn D’Aponti for the first portion of this week’s program.

Mailyn introduced Matt Doty from the Grand Junction High School West Winds. Matt proudly introduced the “West Winds”.  This group of high school students performed for us through song and dance while we ate our lunch.  They are very talented and did well with the four songs that they sang.

Bill Byers brought his son, Bryce, as his guest.  Bill mentioned that Bryce has now graduated and is looking for a great job as an engineer.  Jim Corley brought Alan Watkins as his guest and this time Alan walked out with a Kiwanis Club application!!  Good job, Jim. Jeff Freeland introduced Heather Smith who has turned in an application and will attend orientation this month.  Michele Heiser brought a new face, Barb, to the club as her guest.

Wes announced that orientation was Wednesday, January 31st at the Holiday Inn at 5:15pm.  Don Teets will conduct this meeting and all new members are encouraged to attend.  The Rocky Mountain District Midwinter Conference is in Denver from March 16th through March 18th. Wes also announced that KKCO-TV made a $500.00 donation to our club and this money will go into our Foundation funds.

Bob Colony announced that the District Governor will be at the Golden K meeting.  There are sign up sheets for all that would like to attend. There will be a Hubble Telescope presentation and the cost of the breakfast in $7.50.  Chili Supper and Live Auction tickets were also on our tables. This event takes place on March 7th at 6pm at the Redland Community Center.  The tickets are $6.00.

Ron Sherman was our Fine Master this week.  Fines were given out to Steve Attarean, Kristin Winn, Randy Kirschbaum, Mike Kelly, Mailyn D’Aponti and Wes D’Aponti.  Thank you all for your financial support.

Joe Breman introduced our next program.  Steve Bailey, President of Powderhorn Resort and Rick Rudd, Ski Instructor from Powderhorn gave a great presentation on skiing and snow boarding in the year 2007.  A lot of things have changed over the years and one of those changes is the equipment that is used.  Rick encouraged all of us to visit Powderhorn and check it out.  The Resort has offered our club a 50% discount on a pass, equipment and lesson for the first visit.  We need to have at least 10 people signed up for the discount and if you are interested please contact Joe Breman.  Joe is also looking for members to form a “Challenge Ski Team” that would go against other clubs.

A J/L Buck was paid by Sally Ryan this week. Our fellow Kiwanian, Mark Relph is leaving Grand Junction and moving to Washington State.  Mark will be at club next week to say goodbye.  We will miss Mark and wish him and his family the very best in their new adventure.

P.S.  Jim Moore of the Golden K allowed Kiwanians to take books of chili supper tickets to sell or purchase.

Our meeting was adjourned at 1:15pm.

Until next week….. Roxie Denning, Bulletin Editor
