It looked like the crowd
would be sparse but as it turned out there was several people
here. As our president and president-elect were both gone to the
District Convention Kristin Winn, the Vice President, conducted
the meeting. She said this is her first time being in charge.
She forgot to ring the bell and which came first the song, the
pledge or the prayer but finally she got it all right. Each of
us have had a first time for something and remember how it can
be a little frustrating and unnerving.
The greeters were Gregg Schaefer and Marilee Wood. Gregg came
in and greeted all who had arrived ahead of him. The song of the
day was You’re a Grand Old Flag. Larry Beckner lead in prayer.
The thought for the day was given by Rita Crumpton. It had to do
with how thoughts become actions which become habits which bring
about our character with produces our destiny. John Wikre gave
the defining statement.
Randy Kirschbaum brought Heather Smith as his guest. Mike
Penkaty had Cory Cook as his guest and Jeff Gumone introduced
his son, Justin, as his guest.
Marilee Wood gave a happy buck in honor of Rick Nisley and
Sally Ryan who are accompanying AKTION Club members to the
district convention. Stacey Mascarenas had a buck to tell of his
son being on the winning team at the Little League State
tournament. Ken Willard has happy to be back from his trip to
Washington State where it was very hot. Steve Attarian was happy
to have put the furniture in the new American National bank
building on 24 Road. Kristi Adams was happy because her husband
was not hurt real bad although he has an achilles tendon
rupture. Bob Stratton told how he enjoyed a trip to Marble.
Those with birthdays the past two weeks are Daryl Pridy, Ben
Watkins, Orville Boge, Ken Maher and Katie Ames. Happy birthday
to all.
After I mentioned Brad Willms broken back I will try to pass
the details received from Tom Sheldon and announced by Kristin
Winn today. Mr Willms broke his C-1 vertebrae in four places
playing handball. He is in a halo for the next 4-6 months but is
expected to have a full recovery.
The funeral for Velma Bilger is scheduled for tomorrow,
August 4, at 11AM at the Congregational Church. Velma was one of
the first women to become a member of The Grand Junction Kiwanis
Club. She had been suffering from Cancer.
Ron Sherman was the fine master today. He handed out fines to
our acting president because she had a hard time with the bell.
He also fined Greg Schaefer for being late for greeting. Other
fines were to Jeff Gumone, Rick Tuma, Rita Crumpton, Terry
Wakefield and Pete Jouflas. Pete, however, was able to talk his
way out of the fine.
Last week many went to Camp Kiwanis for our meeting. The camp
looks good and has been cleaned up. Several trees close to the
buildings have been cut and the landscape looks good. About 50
members and their families were there as well as several from
Hilltop House. The surprise was water pistols. Our Treasurer and
another broke to light bulbs in the chandelier.
One of the items at District is the proposal to have the 2008
convention in Grand Junction.
Steve Attarian told about his life. He said he came from
Delaware and attended the University of Colorado. He moved to
Colorado when he was 23 and later married a lady with a child.
They have lived in Montrose and now live in Cedaredge. He likes
to fish and loves Grand Mesa. He chose Greg Schaefer to tell of
his life next week.
Allocations will be given out August 24. Terry Wakefield said
he has applications for $56,000 and has $35,000 to give out.
The program introduced by Marilee Wood was John Wikre. He
talked about a housing iniative from The Grand Junction Housing
Authority to help employers assist their employees to buy
houses. He said he can be reached at gjha.org.
See you all next week. Henry Langstaff Bulletin Editor.
