Kiwanis Weekly

March 2, 2006

Do you believe it? It was time for another month of Kiwanis meetings to start. The greeters today were Tom Sheldon and Doug Stack. The song of the day was God Bless America with Jeanne Thomas at the piano and accompanied by her husband on his horn. Toni Heiden-Moran brought the prayer. The thought for the day was presented by Lynne Sorlye. Shaunalee Wall gave the defining statement and won the five bucks. Tom Sheldon brought News, Weather and Sports.

We had two guests from the Central High Key Club. Lt Gov Joe Cihlar and Mary Hall were those two. Joe said the Rocky Mountain District of Key Club is raising money to help with a school in Viet Nam. He said they had previously raised $25,000 and now were trying to raise an additional $18,000.00 to expand the school. Joe passed a hat for money for the project and also said if we wished to send a tax deductible gift it could be mailed to David Harris, District Administrator, 1641 Parfet Ct, Lakewood, CO, 80232. The checks to be made payable to COPI (Children of Peace International). Joe was also presented $100.00 by the club to pay for expenses to go to the Key Club District Convention. The liaison person for the Central Key Club is Kristi Adams and the one for Fruita is Kevin Price.

Also as a guest was Angela Beckoff brought by Marilee Wood. Angela is a member of the AKTION Club and helped raise some $650 for their fund raising project.

Our program, introduced by Tom Sheldon, was Terri Clemens and Cathy Huller. They were here to talk about the Tree House and the latest project they have. It is to start a homeless and runaway shelter for teens. They are going to have a place for 8 kids at any given time. It is open 24/7 and they are currently remodeling the property at 827 Rood. The cost is some $75,000.00. Terri discussed the need for such a program and how it would benefit the community and the teens thereof. She said they were looking for not only financial support but also verbal support.

Those with happy bucks included Marilee Wood, Kristi Adams, Bob Stratton, Bruce Dwire, and Wes D"Aponti.

Fines were handed out by Jeff Cyriaks to Kevin Price and Doug Stack for no badges. Also fined were Ron Sherman, Rick Nisley, Bob Stratton whose fine was paid by Gordon Harbert, Wes D’Aponti, Guy Stephens and Toni Heiden-Moran.

Amy Dyer told about her life. She said she is from this area and grew up on Mantey Heights. She works with her husband and has 2 grandchildren. She called on Betsy Madden to tell us about herself next week.

Henry Langstaff was recognized by President LeAnn Zetmier for his work with this newsletter and for getting the news over to the district headquarters to go in the regional newsletter.

Michele Heiser was re-inducted into our club. She has been away for the past 4 years but is a past secretary of this Kiwanis Club. Welcome back, Michele. She said she is happy to be back as she is expecting her first grandchild in the next few weeks. Her daughter, and former member of this club, Allison Ellington and husband Ryan live in Montrose. They, too, belonged to this Kiwanis club in the past.

Don Teets will conduct a orientation the fourth week of the month. For details see Don or any of the officers.

Jeff Freeland is looking for sponsors for the golf tournament. It is to be held May 19. Roxie Denning said a membership committee meeting would be held March 2nd. Mailyn D’Aponti said the Safety Walk Committee will hold a meeting March 8 at 8AM at the Main Street Bagel. The Scholarship committee is working on scholarships to be awarded.

Bob Colony announced the kick-off of the Corporate Sponsorships sales for pancake days. The goal this year is $30,000.00. If this is achieved there will be a special dinner for all who sold at least $500 of corporate sales. For details talk to Bob or Kristin Winn. More info coming next week.

Greg Schaefer brought a gift for the president from his recent trip to Hawaii. It was a hand sewn gheko.

President LeAnn recognized Steve Attarian and Shaunalee Wall for completing new member projects. She gave them each a hat. She also thanked Wes and Mailyn D’Aponti for their good job with the Mardi Gras party. Wes then mentioned that Orville and Bonnie Peterson had the best costume and Amy Dyer and her husband had the best personal choice costume (whatever that means). Rick Nisley was recognized for having the funniest costume.

Next week the program will be Young Women of the Month. See you then.
