Today was
Charter Thursday. It was a time to remember the founding of our
Grand Junction Kiwanis Club. Did you know the club is
celebrating it’s 69th year in existence? Of the past
presidents there are 18 who are still members of the club.
Warren Reams was president in 1972. Orville Boge in 1974; Guy
Stevens -‘78; Larry Beckner- ‘86; Greg Schaefer - ‘87; Elgin
Mallory - ‘88; Don Teets - ‘89; Bob Burger - ‘90; Earl Payne -
91; Bruce Hill - ‘93; Rick Tuma - ‘95; Lowell Shormann - ‘96;
Jeff Gumone -‘98; Steve Thompson - ‘99; Rich Emerson - 2000;
rick Nisley - 03; Mark Relph - 04; and Mike Moran - 05. Besides
those active past presidents there are other members who are
past presidents of other Kiwanis Clubs and Bob Colony is a past
Governor of the Rocky Mountain District.
Our greeters today were Jeff Cyriaks and Pat Cantwell. The
song of the day was God Bless America. President LeAnn Zetmier
conducted the first part of the meeting and President Elect Wes
D’Aponti the second half. Mike Moran brought the thought for the
day and Amy Hand won the five bucks for reciting the Kiwanis
defining Statement.
Among the guest today were Lowell Shormann’s wife, Judy.
Other guest included Bruce Isaacson’s wife, Aldean; Rich
Emerson’s wife. Betty; Orville Boge’s wife, Frances; Warren
Reams’s wife, Letha; LeAnn Zetmier’s Husband, Les; Elgin
Mallory’s wife, Sarah; Blaine Scott’s wife, Tracy; Jeff Gumone’s
wife; Bob Colony’s wife, Terry; as well as Lloyd Unfred’s wife,
Kathy; and Don Teets wife, Bonnie. Fred Nichols also brought his
wife, Stephany and Terry Wakefield had his wife Donna with him.
Other guests included Jeff Brown who was with Mailyn D’Aponti
and Audrey Mullis who was introduced by Orville Peterson.
Those with happy bucks were Brook Blaney, Mike Moran, Joe
Higgins, Guy Stephens, Tom LaCroix, Ron Sherman as well as Brad
Willms and Kevin Price. Guest Jeff Brown put in a buck to talk
about the children that Sara The Safety-Saurus has had visit her
this past year.
Ron Sherman was the fine master. He fined Toni Heiden, Gary
Schaefer, Rick Nisley, Joe Higgins, Fred Nichols, David Like,
Roxie Denning and Amy Dyer. Lt Governor Rich Emerson in turn
fined Ron Sherman for harassing our guests.
President LeAnn recognized the members of the board. They are

Congratulations to all.
The person honored for Citizen of the Year was Alex Trottier.
Alex and his wife Lisa were here to receive the award along with
the rest of his family. Alex is the coach of boxing at Impact
Sports. He has helped many young people to learn to box and have
confidence in themselves. The award was given by the club and
the recipient was chosen by the committee of Pete Jouflas, Roxie
Denning, Vikki Bell and Bill Byers.
Those with birthdays this week are Lynne Sorlye, Andy Rhodes,
Tom LaCroix and Mark Ryan
The Safety Walk is coming up May 10. The Safety Walk
Committee will meet next Tuesday, Feb 28 at 8AM at Main Street
Bagels. Come if you would like to be a part of that committee.
Mailyn D’Aponti is heading up the committee.
Lynne Sorlye announced there were 6 women from our club
working at Habitat for Humanity house last Saturday. They hung
sheet rock.
Rich Emerson said the Winter Conference meeting went well.
Our Club was picked as a Pride Of the Rockies for a single
service project.
Roxie Denning announced the membership drive committee will
meet March 2 at 5Pm at Dolce Vita. The Corporate Sales Committee
will meet next week. They also need more members. Kristin Winn
and Bob Colony are the only members designated so far. The
Scholarship committee headed by Joe Breman is working on awards.
Blaine Scott told of his life and named Amy Dyer to do that
honor next week. He said he is a minister and went to the
University of Wyoming.
