Kiwanis Weekly

November 16, 2006

The holiday season is approaching and I send to my fellow Kiwanians warm wishes for a safe and Happy Thanksgiving to you all.  Please remember to count your blessings and be thankful for each and every one of them.

Our greeter this week was Jeff Freeland. Thank you for giving all of us such a wonderful welcome.  Rich Emerson led us in the singing of “This Land is Your Land” and Blaine Scott delivered our invocation.  Each one of you did an outstanding job and we appreciate your contribution to this week’s meeting.

There were many guests at our meeting this week. Lloyd Unfred brought his wife, Cathy. Barbara Hinze introduced Chad Hotimsky and his mom, Joann Hotimsky.  Bruce Hill was accompanied by Dave Varley, our interim City Manager, Fred Nichols brought Beverly Trouster and Amy Dyer introduced Ms Johnson.  Our defining statement was beautifully delivered by Brook Blaney.

Larry Beckner spoke about the Kiwanis long term tradition of the “Young Girl of the Month” program.  The name has now evolved to the “Young Women of the Month”.  These young ladies are recognized each month for their outstanding achievements in our community and through their schools. In November, Betsy Madden introduced  Neely Schott from Grand Junction High School, Ann Weber from Fruita Monument High School, Meagan Bosch from Palisade High School and Stephanie South from Central High School.  They were accompanied by their school sponsors and their parents. Each young lady spoke about their involvement at school and what their future plans were, their sponsors spoke elaborately on all of their achievements and why they enjoyed working with these young women.

Wes D’Aponti recognized Mike Moran, Barb Hinze and Lloyd Unfred for their contributions to our club.  Mike has worked hard on the publicity and public relations committee; Barb and her team for the November programs and Lloyd for the club’s policy on expenses and the approval process.

LeAnn Zetmeir presented Wes with a gift from Hawaii where she spent two weeks basking in the sun. She brought Wes a hula dancer for his truck. I am sure we can all see her (the hula dancer) sitting on the dash board of Wes’ truck.

Our meeting was wrapped up by Ben Watkins’ Thought of the Day and we were adjourned at 1:25.
