The first
meeting of the new year was a good one. President LeAnn Zetmier
was back from the wedding of her son. He got married in Raleigh,
North Carolina. There were no greeters. We were told that Randy
Kirschbaum and Rita Crumpton were supposed to be the greeters
but did not. Larry Beckner lead us in prayer after we sang God
Bless America. Cathy Staten brought the thought for the day. She
talked about a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson about Help and
quoted Mark Twain on Kindness. Blaine Scott recited the defining
Statement and won the $5.00. In case you have forgotten the
defining statement goes as follows: "Kiwanis is a
global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the
world one child and one community at a time."
Dennis Woodrich was playing the piano today in place of Jeanne
Thomas. Jeanne was hurt in an auto wreck. She is reported to
have lacerations on her face, a broken pelvis and more injuries.
She has asked that no one visit her at this time.
Jeff Cyriaks was collecting the fines and quarters today. We
missed Les Goodding who normally handles that job.
Terry Wakefield had his Grandson, Cody, as his guest today.
Rick Nisley introduced Lloyd Unfred as his guest. Lloyd is a
past member of Kiwanis clubs in Washington State and the Denver
area. Bill Byers had his son Bryce with him. Jeff Freeland
introduced Heather Smith as his guest.
Happy bucks were given by Mike McDill who said he has
accepted a job in Glenwood Springs and will be leaving in two
weeks. He is our President-elect so that means Wes D’Aponti will
move up and be the president-elect. A new Vice President will
have to be selected. Rich Emerson had a buck to say he is now
serving as Lt Governor. Fred Wyngarden who was selected to be Lt
Governor this year has resigned. Don Teets had a buck to talk
about the Maverick Basketball teams. Dennis Durmas put a buck in
the pot to talk about his son wanting to come back to hear the
magician this week. When he found out the magician would not be
here he said he did not care to attend. LeAnn Zetmier had a
happy buck that her son got married.
Marilee Wood introduced our program. Shane Collins who is a
member of the Fruita Key Club. However he and his fellow Fruita
High Student told us about a project in Zambia, Africa, to help
the children there who have been orphaned mostly because of AIDS
which is sweeping the African Continent. They had a power point
program to tell of their trip there to help build an orphanage
and improve the water and health aspects of the children. The
program is called Africa Hope. They need money of course.
Steve Thompson acted as fine master today. He told Pete
Jouflas to tell a joke or pay a fine. We heard a joke. Rick
Nisley was fined. Don Teets had to pay a buck as did Henry
Langstaff. Ron Lappe coughed up money. Larry Beckner and Ron
Sherman were fined as well. The women were threatened to be
fined if they did not start sitting at tables where no ladies
were present.
Pat Cantwell was inducted into the club today. Pat was
sponsored by Sandy Barger. He is a newcomer to Grand Junction
and works at Cumulus Broadcasting. Welcome, Pat. He has a
special ribbon on his name badge as a new member. He needs to
complete at least three of five activities to have the ribbon
removed. They are orientation, Bring a new member prospect, be a
greeter, participate in a service project and/or participate on
a committee.
LeAnn Zetmier told us about a little known part of her life.
She said she spent time in Prince of Whales Island in Alaska.
She showed us a button blanket she made while there. She was a
teacher there. Next week Kristi Porter will be bringing
something about herself.
Kristin Winn announced the Habitat for Humanity is planning
to have a women built house. She said the women of our club are
asked to participate January 28. If you are interested contact
Kristin.
The winter meeting is February 17-19 in Denver. Lynne Sorlye
announced if you would like to attend to fill out applications.
Applications are at the front table. Lynne also asked that you
be sure to sign they attendance forms and tell of you activities
for Kiwanis.
Wes D’Aponti reminded us the Winter party is coming up
February 25 at the Adobe Golf Club. It starts at 6PM with food
at 7PM and dancing at 8PM. Make your plans to attend.
See YOU next week. Henry Langstaff Bulletin
