January 26, 2006

President LeAnn Zetmier opened our meeting with a song and the Pledge of Allegiance. Happy bucks were offered by Amy Dyer for her grandson who turned two years old today, and Kristi Adams who reminded us about the Tope Elementary School's Silent Auction on February 25.

Three members of the Central High School Key Club attended our meetingtoday. They are looking to raise funds to go to a District meeting.   President LeAnn mentioned that the club will provide some funding from our budget so that representatives from all key clubs may participate.

The club passed a hat for Jeannie Thomas, who is recovering at home after her car accident. LeAnn suggested we use the money to provide  housecleaning services for Jeannie. Jeannie sent a note thanking everyone for their kind cards, flowers, letters, thoughts and prayers.  She has a long recovery ahead, so keep thinking of her.

Michaele Hizer has returned to our club from Trinidad, CO. where she has been living and working the past three years. She has accepted a position with the Chipeta Girl Scouts. It's great to have you back, Michaele!

Les Goodding returned to the club today. Les had been out several weeks with pneumonia. Great to have you back, too!

Tickets are being sold for the February 25 Mardi Gras Party, which will be held at Adobe Creek Golf Course. Tickets are $30 each, and can be purchased at the club. Next week we'll take your payment by credit card. Cheryl from Cormier's Cajun Cafe=E9 attended the meeting with some  delicious samples of the food we will enjoy for our event. Great Cajun food, dancing to a live band, and outrageous costumes-don't miss this event.

Bob Olescovich from Colorado West Mental Health was our speaker today.  They serve a ten county area west of the Eisenhower Tunnel. Bob spoke about their new in-patient mental health facility that opened in December behind the Texas Roadhouse. Three of the four buildings are completed and opened. They have 44 beds total for the facility. Of those, 16 are for adult patients, 8 for pediatric patients, 8 for adolescents, and 8 are in the detox facility. A fourth building for outpatient services will open in late March. Prior to the opening of this facility, there was nothing located on the Western Slope for in-patient mental health hospitalization,  and people had to travel all the way to Pueblo.

Orville Peterson gave a "This is Your Life" report, telling the club that he was fortunate to spend three summers  working on a ranch in the San Juan's when he was about 14. The guiding business belonged to a friend's father, and they spent most of those summers on horses. We'll hear from Kristin Winn next week.

Kristin Winn was elected to the 1st Vice-President position, and Wes D'Aponti moves up to Vice-President with the departure of Mike McDill to Glenwood Springs. We'll miss Mike.

Rick Nisley has updated the Kiwanis membership directory, and it is available on the web as a PDF file. The address is www.kiwanis-gj.org . The sign in is Kiwanis, and the password is Pancake.

Reminder-the Charter Luncheon will be held on February 23.

Respectfully submitted by Kristin Winn, filling in for Henry Langstaff
