Kiwanis Weekly

September 1, 2005

The meeting today was a normal meeting with the normal things going on. This of course, made it a fun meeting as that is the normal way things are done at Kiwanis.

Everyone was expressing concern for the unfortunate ones in the South who had to put up with the woes brought on the Hurricane Katrina. If you wish you may contribute to the relief through the Red Cross, the Salvation Army or even through the Kiwanis International. Just to Kiwanis.org on the web and make your contribution.

The greeters today were Vikki Bell and Ben Watkins. The song of the day was God Bless America. President Mike Moran conducted the meeting. Bill Byers lead the prayer. The joke of the day was told by Stacey Mascarenas. It had to do with how even when a man listens he does not understand what his wife means. (She later was fined for that sexist joke.) Then thought for the day was presented by Gabe DeGabriel.

Those with guests were Lou Shirlen who had Tim Burch with him, Bruce Hill who brought his father William Hill, and Kristi Adams who introduced Tammy Morris from the American Red Cross.

Bruce Dwire put in a happy buck as he has heard from his son-in-law from New Orleans and they are safe if homeless. Orville Boge had a buck because he and his wife are celebrating their 55th anniversary. Sally Ryan put money in because her friend went through cancer surgery successfully. LeAnn Zetmier had a buck to mention her daughter is working on the western slope. Bill Byers also put in a happy buck.

Birthdays were mentioned for Bob Burger and Brad Krebill. Bob told us he was born in Germany and Brad Krebill said he has been to only one NFL game. It was between the Patriots and the NY Jets. Joe Namath was the quarter back for the Jets and they won.

Don Teets is celebrating his Kiwanis anniversary. He said this is the best day of his Kiwanis membership.

Last week I erred when I said where the NASCAR simulator which Steve Katz is heading up was to be held. It is on September 17 at the East Gate Shopping Center. For more information contact Steve.

Other announcements include Color Sunday at Camp Kiwanis on September 25 from 3-5PM. Sign-ups will be here next week. Sandy Barger has been named the new board member replacing Heidi Pankow. There will be work days for Habitat for Humanity coming up soon. Gabe DeGabriel said more information about Habitat is coming soon.

The program today was Paul Peck from the National Conservation Area talking about McInnis Canyons. He was introduced by Bill Byers.

Jessica Peterson from Mesa County announced an upcoming 4 week course on Inside Mesa County: Know Your Government. There were brochures on the table. If you have questions call her at 244-1640.

Ron Sherman handed out fines for various and sundry reasons to the following: Stacy Mascarenas, Brad Krebill, Mark Relph, Ron Lappi, Bruce Hill, Bob Colony, Toni Heiden-Moran, Bob Burger, Vikki Bell, Gordon Harbert, Mike Moran and Greg Schaefer.

Greg Schaefer brought a gift to the president. He said he had been to Memphis, TN and visited Grace Land. He had an autographed picture of himself and his wife taken at Grace Land. Sorry, no Elvis Presley memorabilia.

Last week I mentioned the new Kiwanis Motto. I erred in what it is. It is Serving the Children of the World.

Next week the program is about the tree house. Come and see what that is about. See you then.
