We were greeted
for the first meeting in June by Blaine Scott and Ron Lappi.
Blaine also provided the invocation and Ron the Thought for
the day. Thanks to Marilee Wood’s team for taking care of all
these duties. There were many guests in attendance. Merrill
Hinshaw is a Kiwanis Life member who has just relocated to
Grand Junction, most recently from St. George, Utah. Mike
McDill brought wife Penny. Paul Miller’s distinguished guest
was Mesa State president, Tim Foster. Rick Nisley introduced
the official JUCO scorer, Chris Day. Jeff Freeland had Barb
Heinze as a guest and Bob Colony brought Andy Rhoads. Andy was
inducted into membership today. Welcome! Vikki Bell brought
Vic Pawley. Vic and Barb have turned in applications. Randy
Rexwinkle had his wife Boots here today and Terry Wakefield
brought grandson, Cody. Jon Wickre introduced Gabe DeGabriel.
Many Happy Bucks were offered for JUCO related subjects.
Lee Young and Don Teets were happy about sponsorships and Rick
said the JUCO website had 62,000 hits. Heidi Waggoner is
celebrating her son’s fourth birthday and Blaine Scott is glad
that his daughter has graduated from high school and his wife
is finally able to join him in Grand Junction.
Marilee Wood introduced the program. New member Jon Wickre
gave a very informative talk on the programs of the Grand
Junction Housing Authority in regards to affordable housing in
the valley. This is an issue that affects many families in the
area.
Pancake Day is just two short weeks away! Guy Stephens
updated us on the day’s programs and entertainment and
acknowledged Joyce with Two Rivers for her donation of stuffed
animals for the cakewalk. Amy Dyer announced that we need more
Silent Auction items. Please round up some items-large or
small- and bring them down to Heiden Homes. LeAnn updated us
on ticket sales and thanked Mike Kelly, new member, for
donating signs and banners from Your Sign Company. Our ticket
sales to date are $8,659 with today’s $2,609. Prize winners
today were Elgin Mallory, Bill Byers and Heidi Waggoner. Sales
are behind the pace we need with Pancake Day approaching so
sell, sell sell!
Mike McDill reported on membership Drive. We are delighted
to have quite a number of applications and some really great
people planning to join our ranks. Blaine Scott spoke about
what his new membership means to him. He is enjoying the
people and friendships that he is forming and is glad to be
doing something positive for his new community. (We are really
pleased to have a "pro" in our midst when it comes to
invocations).
Reminder: There is a Board meeting next Wednesday, June 8,
at 5:15 at City Hall. Members are always welcome to come.
A special thanks to Lynne Sorlye for writing this
newsletter as I was unable to attend.
