Kiwanis Weekly

June 16, 2005

There was a lot of energy in the air today as we have reached the day before the BIG day. Our 38th annual Pancake Day is tomorrow and it looks like we are ready! Our greeters today were Ron Lappi and Rick Nisley. Rick Stevenson had the invocation and Kevin Price had the joke which was a list of what and what not to buy Dad for Father’s Day.

There were quite a few guests today. Merrill Henshaw joined us again. He has recently moved to Grand Junction and is a lifetime Kiwanis member. He turned in an application today and stole the President’s gavel. Looks like he will fit right in. Mailyn D’Aponti brought daughter Adriana who came to work on Silent Auction. New member Kristi Adams brought Cory Bickmore and her two boys, Steven and Spencer. Randy Kirschbaun brought Lisa Megufe. Randy Rexwinkle had his wife Boots in attendance and Terry Wakefield brought grandson Cooper. More family members were introduced by Darlene Ficklin who had daughter Colleen and Daryl Pridy’s guests were his two kids.

We had no birthdays to celebrate this week. Kiwanis anniversaries noted were Henry Langstaff and Bill Byers. Bill was present and remembered being honored as Citizen of the Year a couple of years back.

Among the many Happy Bucks were Mark Relph for his daughter’s plan to attend Yale to study chemistry. Dennis Durmas was happy that his company’s softball team beat Gordon Harbert’s team. Gordon was happy about his trip to New Zealand and Australia. Bob Burger is happy to be a radio personality with KNZZ and Sandy Barger had a buck for her new real estate office. Brad Krebill received and thank you from the Hutchinson Kansas JUCO team that we sponsored.

If the absence of Steve Thompson, Ron Sherman was pretty heavy handed with the fines. He thought Toni Heiden did too much advertising and also got Sandy Barger for mentioning her company. He told Bob Burger that he would not be replacing Wolfman Jack. Mark Relph got stung for being on the news and the city paying too much for a property. He tried to fine Bill Byers over his utility bill until Bill pointed out it was a different utility. Ron even fined Finemaster Steve for being gone so much. Steve will owe five bucks on his return.

All of the Pancake Chairs reported on their committees. It sounds like we are prepared and ready for big crowds. Today’s reported ticket sales were $3,833 with a total to date of $14,550. Thanks to all of the great publicity we have gotten, we expect a big walk in business. Mike recognized Matt Guccini, Vern Gray and Ben Watkins for all of their work in getting the word out and providing great coverage of the event. There are nearly $14,000 in Silent Auction items including a Honda ATV and a Lake Powell houseboat rental. Thanks to all the members who brought in items for the auction.

Rick Nisley read the proclamation that Mayor Bruce Hill put before the City Council this week. He proclaimed this week Kiwanis Week and renamed Main Street Pancake Avenue for the week. Rick announced the plans for the Party in the Park to follow Pancake Day at Hawthorn Park. Rick has invented two new beer varieties that he is anxious to try out on everyone.

Again the enthusiasm and energy of our membership is a great thing to experience.

It is awesome what a group of people can do when they have a common goal and work together to make a great event happen!

The total pancake day figures to date are $55,000. This is a new record. Thanks to all the members for their help at the pancake day and for their efforts to sell tickets and corporate sponsorships.

A special thanks to Lynne Sorlye for doing the news letter again. I was in Denver. My wife had a defibulator implanted Friday morning. She is doing fine to date.

Henry Langstaff Bulletin Editor.
