When you come to Kiwanis at Two-Rivers you never
know what is in store for you. Today we met in a tent outside
the front door of Two-Rivers. It seems the Grand Junction Board
of Realtors took up too much room for us to fit inside. It was
different and fun for a change. We also were entertained by the
Grand Junction High School West Winds Chorus. They sang 6 songs
with lots of action. It was fun. I hope you did not miss this
great meeting.
Larry Beckner was in charge today. He is a past
president. He said he was president in 1985-1986. When he
started his term there were 110 members and by the time he left
the club was down to 93. You can thank the Oil Shale bust, not
Larry’s administration.
The prayer was offered by Bob Stratton. The song
of the day was God Bless America. The greeters were Stephanie
Tuin and ?. I am sorry but I did not see any other greeter. If
you were the one who was greeting with her thanks anyway.
Dennis Mitchell brought the thought for the day.
It had to do with fish and the dam. You needed to hear him tell
it to appreciate what it was about.
I forgot to mention about the birthdays last
week. It was Earl Payne’s birthday. He said his parents were 49
years old when he was born. Jeff Gumone also was celebrating a
birthday. He said he and his wife are expecting another baby in
the summer. We did not talk about birthdays this week.
Guests today included Gordon Harbert’s wife.
Also, Heidi Pankow was here with her new daughter, Hannah. Rick
Stevenson had his wife Sharon with him. Jeanne Thomas was
accompanied by her husband, Chuck and her niece Christine Burk.
Christine was our program. More on that later. Doug Stack, who
is about to be inducted, brought Scott McMillan(?)with him. The
Central High Key Club was out in force. They filled one table.
At the urging of acting President Larry Beckner and with the
leading of Rich Emerson we sang the Kiwanis Welcome Song. After
hearing it, maybe that is why the club numbers decreased during
Larry’s administration.
Jeanne Thomas introduced our program today. Her
Niece, Christine Burk, was the speaker. Christine is with the
IRI (International Republican Institute). They go to developing
countries and tell them how to introduce Democracy to those
countries. She told about her experiences in Indonesia, Russia,
Angola and Mongolia. She told a little about the changes to
change from a socialist country to a free market country as well
as from a dictatorship to a free country. She said the world is
moving toward more freedom. She said her group is helping in the
Middle East.
Blaine Scott was inducted into the club today.
He was sponsored by Orville Boge. Blaine is the senior pastor at
the First United Methodist Church of Grand Junction. He and his
wife recently moved here from Cheyenne, WY. Welcome Blaine.
