Kiwanis Weekly

February 3, 2005

Today our meeting was conducted by past president Guy Stephens. Guy was president of the club in 1977-1978. He said one of his most memorable times as president was when he received a trophy for the Grand Junction High Key Club. He had that trophy at club today and presented it to Bruce Hill who was a member of the Grand Junction High Key club in that era. Bruce, as I am sure most everyone knows, is now a member of our club.

The greeters today were Randy Kirschbaum and Greg Schaefer. Larry Beckner brought the prayer of the day. The song was Heart of My Heart.. Greg Schaefer brought the joke of the day. It had to do with what you would not hear a southern boy say. I think Greg needs to take a few lessons on joke telling from Pete Jouflas as he could not seem to get anyone to laugh at his joke. The Thought for the Day was given by Larry Beckner. It had to do with the three women in a man’s life and how they should never meet. Greg Schaefer was the mystery greeter. He awarded the money to Katie Ames. Thanks go to Kristin Winn’s team for taking care of the activities today.

Guests today included Layne Scott, introduced by Orville Boge. Amy Hand had her mother as her guest. Joan Bush(?), was her name. Bruce Hill brought his son Brandon to club. Ken Maher introduced visiting Kiwanian, David Edmundson, from the Arroyo Grande, California club. Bob Hanson had Lee Miller from the Golden K club as his guest.. Finally Ben Watkins and Sally Ryan were with us. They have been approved for membership and will be inducted shortly.

Both Ben and Sally attended orientation meetings with Don Teets and are approved for membership. If you have someone you would like to see join remember they need to attend Orientation prior to being admitted to the club. They first Wednesday of the month Don Teets conducts an orientation at the Holiday Inn on Horizon Drive at 5Pm.

Beginning this week a certificate of appreciation will be presented to each program person. According to Rick Nisley this will be an ongoing thing.

Birthdays were celebrated this week by Kiwanis members Rick Nisley and Toni Heiden-Moran.

Steve Thompson handed out fines to all members who did not have their Kiwanis pins on. He also fined Bill Byers, Rick Nisley, and Bruce Hill. He recognized Thea Chase and Janet Rowlands as being with us and threatened a fine but after hearing Thea’s and Janet’s excuses decided not to fine them.

Past International President Norris Lutchke sent his thank you for our prayers and card during his recent illness.

Next week Mike Moran and LeAnn Zetmier will conduct the Charter Luncheon. Be sure to attend. The annual awards for membership will be handed out and the outstanding citizen of the year will be honored. See you then.

Allison Ellington announced the Mardi Gras ticket sales will conclude today. The party is this Saturday night at the Bookcliff Country Club. If you have bought your tickets plan to be there. You may come in costume if you like.

The program today was Rita London, introduced by Kristin Winn. She spoke about the Western Colorado Botanical Garden. She told how it got started and that they needed additional help.

Bob Hanson and Lee Miller will selling tickets for a Golden K club function to be next Friday February 11. It is called FAC & RCC.

Mike Moran announced the Rotary bell has been found along with several other bells. The Sunshine Rotary club had it. Mike and Rick Nisley will go to Rotary next Wednesday and trade their bell for ours. Let’s hope we can keep all these bells straight in the future.

See you next week.
