Kiwanis Weekly

November 23, 2005

Wednesday, November 23, was our joint meeting with Rotary. If anyone did not plan a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving, they had the opportunity to indulge on Wednesday! Rotary President Kim Giannone presided with assistance from President LeAnn. I do believe that Rotarians may be better singers as the two songs we sang sounded better than our usual effort.

Kiwanians with guests were Rick Tuma who brought his son Travis and Barbara Hinze who introduced Ted Munkres.

President Kim explained the Rotary system of fines. She said at first she was unsure how much to fine members so someone introduced a miniature roulette wheel. When found guilty of a fineable offense, you have the choice of paying $20 or taking your chance spinning the ‘wheel of misfortune’ which had amounts from $3 to upwards of $60. They collected more in one meeting than we come close to in a month so next time you are assessed a buck, pay it and be thankful! Rotarians must also be happier than Kiwanians because most of their Happy Bucks were actually about ten bucks.

Major Parker with the Salvation Army spoke about the upcoming bell ringing. He said that the amounts traditionally raised by Rotary and Kiwanis account for about a quarter of the total for the season which points out how important it is for us to get out and ring those bells and bring our checkbooks next Thursday to get the drive off to a good start. Rotary conceded the morning slot to us so we will be ringing from 10AM to noon on Saturday, December 3. Meet at the Salvation Army headquarters any time after 9AM. There will be coffee and doughnuts. The criteria for the competition will be the same as last year-the biggest percentage increase.

A program followed which was given by a Rotarian from Colorado Springs who is a dentist. She travels around the world holding dental clinics in poor countries. She showed slides from recent trips to Indonesia and Guatemala. It was an impressive presentation.

To close the meeting, President LeAnn read a humorous poem about Thanksgiving dinner. Hope it was a blessed Thanksgiving for all.

Mike Doring from the Golden K Kiwanis Club asked me to tell you the auction at the Christmas Party for Golden K and any of us who care to attend will not be a silent auction but a very loud auction conducted by Don Teets. He also said they have every item they need for the auction so they do not need anything from us. Everyone who signs up to attend the party will be billed so if you plan to attend sign up but do not if you are just thinking you might. Any questions contact Mike Doring of the Golden K Club. His e-mail address is amdoring@bresnan.net.

I wish to thank Lynne Sorlye for writing the newsletter. Don’t forget this Thursday at the usual time and place our meeting will take place.
