Kiwanis Weekly

October 27, 2005

Today, our speaker was Kiwanis member and County Commissioner, Janet Rowland. She brought a thought provoking program on the Meth problem in Mesa County. Janet said the jail is full of people who are there because of the problems drugs have brought about. She also said much of the drugs are being brought in from out of the area, mostly from Mexico. She spoke of how drugs ruins lives and families. She said there is a great need for people in the community to get involved in combating this problem. If you are aware of a drug situation call the law enforcement people or the Drug Task Force. Or you may call Crime Stoppers.

President LeAnn Zetmier called the meeting to order. She recognized the greeter. There was only one today. Daryl Mattivi did the task by himself. Orville Peterson lead in prayer. The song of the day was Shine On Harvest Moon. There were two thoughts of the day. Both Rita Crumpton and Daryl Mattivi had good thoughts. Orville Peterson recited the Kiwanis Motto and won the $5.00.

Those with guests included Toni Heiden-Moran who brought Linda Lockhart with her. Joe Breman had his son, Matthew , with him. Rick Nisley introduced the Lt Governor, Fred Wyngarden. Brad Krebill brought Kirk Casltelman as his guest. The Central High Key Club had three members here. They were collecting money as part of Trick or Treat for UNICEF. Roxie Denning introduced Steve Attarean again. Steve is to be inducted next week.

Roxie said her and Steve attended Don Teets Orientation last night. Don then reminded us about how Kiwanis is a family of clubs. In the Grand Valley there are three Kiwanis Clubs including our club, The Golden K Club and the Western Slope Kiwanis Club. There are also two Key Clubs in two of the High Schools here in the valley. There is also a new Circle K Club at Mesa State College as well as the Aktion Club which is for those with developmental problems.

Amy Dyer asked me to remind you that the Aktion club will meet December 1 at 4PM at the MDS building. Also the Aktion club plans to have a fund raiser on October 29 with the Western Slope Harley Hog Club. You are invited to attend. It will be at Amy’s home located at 2174 Broadway at 6-9PM. Call Amy for further details. Her phone is 245-4558.

Those with happy bucks included Dennis Durmas, Rich Emerson who lead us in the Kiwanis Welcome Song, Don Teets, Jean Thomas, Toni Heiden-Moran, Stephanie Tuin, Bill Byers, Rita Crumpton, Darrel Hinshaw and Mike Moran.

President LeAnn handed out fines to Rick Nisley for interrupting the president last week. She also fined Pete Jouflas and Greg Schaefer. She mentioned a fine for Sharon Baxter but she was not here to pay up.

Lt Governor, Fred Wyngarden, announced he will have to leave the district the first of March. He has experienced breathing problems due to the altitude and on doctors advice will be moving to a lower elevation. He asked if anyone would like to finish his year as Lt Governor beginning in March. Rich Emerson said he would.

Orville Peterson announced the Sewer System at Camp Kiwanis has been accepted by the county health department.

President LeAnn Zetmier reminded everyone of the upcoming joint meeting with Rotary. It will be November 23. The Bill ringing for Salvation Army is to be December 3. The Board meeting will be November 9.

See you next week. Henry Langstaff, Bulletin Editor.
