One of the
members with a lot of history lead the meeting today. As most of
you know our president Mike Moran is unable to be here for most
meetings the next three months as he is teaching a class. Rather
than having president-elect LeAnn Zetmier do all the meetings he
has asked past presidents to lead. Today Warren Reams, who was
president in 1972-1973, was in charge. Warren said he has been a
member of this club for fifty years. He also said some of his
best friendships are a result of his Kiwanis membership. It was
fun to have a early member of this club conducting the meeting.
Next week Guy Stephens is to lead, don’t miss it.The greeters
today were Pete Jouflas and Brook Blaney. I understand Pete took
care of the early greeting and Brook the late. At least that was
their story.
Paul Miller lead the prayer, Pete Jouflas told the joke. Or
maybe I should say he conducted the joke telling. He said he was
training Matt Guccini how to tell jokes. He had Matt read the
joke. Fortunately it was not a meeting where there was a lot of
young people as the joke was a little raw around the edges. The
thought for the day was given by Brook Blaney. Heidi Pankow’s
group was in charge of the meeting.
Heidi Pankow also introduced our program. She had Dianne
Schwenke speak. Dianne is with the chamber of commerce. She
talked about the goals of the chamber for 2005. She also spoke
of their plans for an events center. She said the cost of an
events center that could seat some 5000 to 7000 people would be
25-35 million dollars.
Jeff Freeland had his daughter, Lisa, as his guest. Warren
Reams brought his son, Charles. Vernon Gray introduced Melissa
Mahan. Rick Nisley had us meet Sally Ryan for the third time.
She is a recent arrival in the valley. She was a member of the
Lakewood Kiwanis Club and is transferring her membership. This
year to become a member of our club prospective members must
attend an orientation class. The next one is scheduled for the
first Wednesday in February at the Holiday Inn on Horizon Drive.
The time is 5Pm and Don Teets will lead in the discussion.
Those with Happy Bucks today were Brook Blaney, Stacy
Mascarenas, Jeff Freeland, Orville Boge, Larry Beckner, LeAnn
Zetmier, Amy Dyer and Randy Rexwinkle.
Fine master Steve Thompson handed our fines to Pete Jouflas,
Brook Blaney, Mike Stahl, LeAnn Zetmeir, Jeff Freeland, who
forgot to give his daughters name when he introduced her, Stacy
Mascarenas, Rick Nisley and Toni Heiden-Moran.
The charter luncheon is coming up February 10. The Marti Gras
party is February 5 and next Thursday will be the last day to
buy tickets. The cost is $30 each. It is to be at the Bookcliff
Country Club.
Orville Boge will be leading the meeting on February 17.
There is to be a Good Friday breakfast March 25. Don Teets is in
charge of this endeavor.
The Safety Walk will me May 11. Mailyn D’Aponti is heading
that up. She said there will be a committee meeting February 4
at 8AM at the Main Street Bagel shop. If you are interested in
being on that committee plan to attend that meeting.
President Mike Moran came in for the last of the meeting. He
said the club is trying to find the Rotary Bell. We had it and
lost it. There is a $150 reward offered for it’s return.
While he was here Brook Blaney brought him a gift for the
president . Brook had been to New Orleans. He brought a shot
glass and other gifts.
Stacy Mascarenas and Paul Miller reported on their meeting
with the officials of Mesa State College in the effort to get a
Circle K Club started at Mesa. There are some 500 clubs
throughout college campuses with over 12000 members. Let’s get
behind this effort for a service club for the college.
LeAnn Zetmeir announced there are Key Club Scholarships
available. Worthy members of the Key Clubs should apply.
Next week the meeting will be conducted by Guy Stephens. Plan
to be here!
