Kiwanis Weekly

September 9, 2004

I hope you were at Kiwanis today. If you were there you know we had a great time. President Mark was so happy he gave a buck because he only has two more weeks before his term is over. He also was happy because he would not have to keep track of the bell any more. It was missing today so he banged on his briefcase to call the meeting to order. Rick Nisley later produced the bell. It was hidden with Jeannie Thomas at the piano.

The greeters today were Gordon Harbert and Mary Dunder. The song of the day was America, The Beautiful. Larry Beckner brought the prayer. Guy Stephens told the joke of the day. It had to do with two men who died when the one hid in the freezer and the other one chased around looking for him. The Thought of the day was from Mary Dunder. It had to do with helping others to help themselves. Mary was also the mystery greeter. She said Brook Blaney was the last one to shake her hand.

Among the guests at club were the following: Sharon Baxter brought Jennie Fulton. Lynne Sorlye introduced Darlene Ficklin for the second time. Rita Crumpton was accompanied by her sister Ramona Richers. Ramona is the Lt Governor of District 9. She told us about the happenings in her district this year. Alan Teck, visiting from the Arvada, Wheatridge Club introduced his brother Ron Teck who is the State Senator in our area. Randy Rexwinkle had his wife, Boots, as his guest. Tom LaCroix once again had Amy Hand with him. Amy is transferring her membership from a Kiwanis Club in Michigan. Welcome to all.

Among those giving happy Bucks were Bob Burger who enjoyed going with his daughter to the CU/CSU game last week. Also Ron Lappi had a buck to talk about the Citizens Academy. Kristin Winn is happy because her son is off to college. Marilee Wood put in a buck to talk about the upcoming AKTION club fund raiser, a car wash on September 18. It will be at the car wash across from Harbert Lumber on North Avenue between 10 and 2PM. Stephanie Tuin was happy because her son is back in Colorado. Bill Byers said his table was happy because Roxie Denning was pregnant. She however denied the allegation. Pete Jouflas put in a buck because he said he, too, was happy that Roxie was not pregnant.

Rich Emerson was happy because he is grandfather again. He said his 5th grandchild arrived and weighed in at 5#.

The speaker was Ken Stein. He is with the Colorado West Regional Mental Health, Inc. He was introduced by Guy Stephens. He told of all the work they are doing to help those in Northwest Colorado who have mental health problems.. They serve 10 counties including Mesa county.

Fred Aldridge and Bill Kistler are celebrating birthdays this week. Bill was at club and said he found being honored by his peers as a very memorable thing.

Mona Dyer is celebrating her anniversary this week. If you see her wish her a happy anniversary.

Don’t forget the sign-up for the meeting at Camp Kiwanis September 26. Also the Oktoberfest is coming up on Saturday October 2nd. Bruce Dwire announced there will be sign-up sheets on the table next week.

I have been asked to announce the Quarterly billing will go out one week early. If you bring a guest on the 30th or if you are a senior member the billings for the 30th will be on next quarter’s bill. If you are having trouble receiving your bill please contact Lynne Sorlye and tell her where you want the billing sent.

Steve Thompson handed out fines today to Mike Moran for not having the pictures last week. He also fined Rich Emerson for not paying enough for his grandchild. Rita Crumpton and Tom LaCroix were fined as well as Bill Byers and Bill Kistler.

Rick Nisley announced there will be a special election to fill the vacancy on the board. The only nominee so far is Kristin Winn. The nominations will be open next week and then the election will take place.

Heidi Pankow read a thank you note from Tara Anderson. She thanked the club for the Key Club scholarship she received. She was president of the Central Key Club the past two years.

The Golden K Club is celebrating their 2nd anniversary on September 29. Our club is invited to come. Bob Colony said contact him is you wish to attend.

There were gifts for the president again today. Kristin Winn brought gifts back from her trip to Illinois. Among the gifts was a pull toy John Deere Tractor to attach to your fan. Katie Ames recently returned from a trip to England and Holland. She brought several sea shells and a small set of wooden shoes. Randy Rexwinkle and Jeff Cyriaks recently went to Alaska. They had several gag gifts and a hat for President Mark.
