Kiwanis Weekly

September 30, 2004

Can you believe it? Another year in Kiwanis has passed. There was a slide presentation of the activities of the administrative year thanks to Rick Nisley. Today was the changing of the guard. Mark Relph stated he was happy to see the new administration take over. He will no longer have to keep track of the bell. Isn’t it strange when we cannot trust our own club members to help him with this task. In fact the bell was missing from the podium at the beginning of the meeting and was found with one of the members. Go Figure!!!

After being greeted by Ken Willard and Guy Stephens we sang America, the Beautiful and had the opening prayer lead by Randy Kirschbaum. The thought for the day was given by Dave Kearsley in place of Randy Kirschbaum and the joke of the day was brought by Ken Willard.

Guests today included several members of the Central Key Club. Also Heidi Pankow introduced Carolyn Foster as her guest. Don Fifield, the new president of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, was here and outgoing Lt Governor Mike Doring. Mark Relph’s wife was a guest as well as Ed Branson’s wife.

Happy Bucks were given by Mary Dunston, Mike Doring, Toni Moran, and LeAnn Zetmier. Mark Relph had a buck for the completion of his term as president. Randy Kirschbaum and Steve Thompson also put in money.

Sue Connery and Gordon Harbert are celebrating birthdays this week. Gordon was at club and told how he was stuck in shrink wrap and place on North Avenue by his employees in honor of his birthday and another time his wife told him she was pregnant which scared him very much. Happy Birthday to both of you.

There was a thank you card passed around from the Katz family. They thanked us for all cards and kindnesses at the time of the loss of their son.

Wally Bissinger from the Golden K club called me this week and asked me to mention that the check presented for Key Club scholarships from the Golden K was for $400 and the anticipate a larger amount next year.

Fine master Steve Thompson passed out fines to Bruce Hill for all of his exposure in the news with no mention of Kiwanis. LeAnn Zetmier was recognized for mentioning Kiwanis when she made the news. Rick Nisley was fined for stealing the bell. Gordon Harbert paid for telling about two unforgettable birthdays. Ken Willard was fined for his joke.

Outgoing Lt Governor Mike Doring was here and thanked our club for their support this past year. He also said to be sure to support Rich Emerson for Governor of Kiwanis this coming year. He then proceeded to pass out fines to Greg Schaefer, Bruce Hill and Steve Thompson. After that he inducted Rick Nisley as his successor as Lt Governor.

Outgoing president Mark Relph recognized the outgoing board and presented clocks to all those who served with him. Last year the board members included. Randy Kirschbaum, Jeff Freeland, Heidi Pankow, Orville Peterson, Mike McDill and Henry Langstaff as well as Lynne Sorlye as Secretary, Bruce Dwire as Treasurer, LeAnn Zetmier as Vice President. Mike Moran was President Elect and Rick Nisley was Past President.

President Mark recognized Lynne Sorlye as Kiwanian of the Year. Lynne has done an outstanding job as Secretary as well as helped in all the club functions The award was sell deserved. The outstanding new member was not present and not recognized. That award will be made when that person is present at club.

Lt Governor Rick Nisley then swore in the new members of the board and new officers. The board consists of Gary Brown, Wes D’Aponti, Marilee Wood, Jeff Freeland, Amy Dyer, Heidi Pankow and Kristin Winn. Lynne Sorlye will continue as secretary. The new treasurer is Orville Peterson. The vice president is Mike McDill. The president elect is LeAnn Zetmier and the President is Mike Moran. The past president is Mark Relph. Thanks to all the members who are willing to serve in these posts and to those who have served in the past.

President Mike Moran then gave a brief talk about his plans for the coming year. He named Don Teets to cover induction information and Bob Burger as his past president advisor. He also said

we would have a Mardi Gras party again this year and meet with the Rotary twice before the time for bell ringing. The time of our Kiwanis membership anniversary will be recognized rather than our wedding anniversary. It looks like another great year.

Don’t forget Oktoberfest this Saturday and we will see you next week when the program is about domestic violence. Judy Shormann will be bringing that presentation.
