Kiwanis Weekly

July 1, 2004

The crowd at Kiwanis was down a little. I suppose that is because it is Summer. In fact we know at least three of our members have been traveling lately as there were three with gifts for the President. President Mark received travel mementoes from Bruce Dwire who just came back from Hawaii. He brought back a Lei, a coffee cup and some coffee. Bob Colony also had a gift for the president. He brought a can of salmon from his trip to Alaska along with all the soap, lotion etc. that were given to him. He also brought a Canadian flag. LeAnn Zetmier was just back from a trip to the Paradise Island. (Where ever that it.) She brought some whistles and hands to control the traffic.

The greeters today were Katie Ames and Ken Maher. The song of the day was I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy. The prayer was offered by Joe Breman. The joke of the day was brought by Ken Maher. The Thought for the Day by Katie Ames. Ken was also the mystery greeter and he awarded the money to Bob Colony.

Mike McDill introduced the program. It was Trent Proll who talked about the Riverside Parkway. He said there are some $80,000,000 to be spent. The money is all from local sources and will be spent by November 2009. He brought a very interesting power point presentation regarding the plans for the parkway.

Guests today included visiting Kiwanian Alan Teck from the Arvada Kiwanis club. He is also related to our own state senator, Ron Tech. Bill Byers had his son Bill and Bill’s wife Rachel as his guests. Steve Katz introduced the new owner of Katz Automotive. His name is Bill Spitznogle. Welcome to all.

Happy Bucks were given by Joe Breman because of the Israel Scouts who will be at the Avalon Theatre on July 10; Mike McDill because his middle daughter is going to Beijing, China on a scholarship; Stacy Mascarenas who just had successful surgery and Larry Beckner because he got a yard sign for Janet Rowland. Sandy Barger announced her kids are in a play and said she had tickets to sell.

President Mark handed out fines to Roger Martin and Scott Hayduk for not having satisfactory stories about their anniversaries. He also fined Jeff Cyriaks for interrupting the proceedings.

Pancake days has been a great success this year. It looks like we will net some $39,000 which is $9000 above last years record. The top individual ticket selling individuals where in a drawing for four Grand Prizes. The winners were Orville Boge, Marilee Woods, Jeff Freeland and Gordon Harbert. Those recognized by the Pancake day promotion committee of LeAnn Zetmier, Roxie Denning and Heidi Pankow were the following: Bruce Isaacson – $368, Scott Hayduk – $300, Henry Langstaff – $408, Elgin Mallory – $518, Jeff Freeland – $370, Bob Hanson – $542, Terry Wakefield – $300, Orville Boge – $1060, Gordon Harbert – $600, Greg Schaefer – $912, Lynne Sorlye – $324, Bob Colony – $540, Pete Jouflas – $620, Ron Lappi – $480 and Don Teets $480. This is not to mention those who sold corporate sponsorships. As these were almost double the previous year I think they especially need to be recognized.

The program scheduled for next week is City Volunteer Boards. Don’t miss it!

Thanks to everyone for making Pancake Day a big success. Lots of hours were put in not only on the day of Pancakes but also in preparation and in selling all the tickets, Corporate sponsorships, Silent Auction and Cake Walk.

See you next week!
