Kiwanis Weekly

June 24, 2004

It was another great day at Kiwanis. If you missed it you missed hearing about the successful Kiwanis Pancake Day. All the numbers are not in yet but the Gross sales for all the items including ticket sales, corporate sponsorship, silent auction and cake walk was in excess of $48,000.00 with the net projected to be in excess of $38,000.00. These were records all around. Pancake day chairman Mike Moran thanked all for helping and especially thanked Heidi Pankow and Roxie Denning for doing a great job with the promotions. He also mentioned how all the local media gave us great publicity. Thanks to everyone for making this year a tremendous success.

President Mark Relph called the meeting to order. The greeter today was Orville Peterson. The song of the day was It’s A Grand Old Flag. Orville Peterson lead the prayer. Brad Krebill brought the joke of the day. It had to do a redneck’s letter. Brad said this was appropriate for Country Jam. Bruce Isaacson brought the Thought for the day. He quoted Henry David Thoreau in Walden Pond. "The cost of a thing is the amount of Your Life you exchange for it." Mike Moran was the mystery greeter and announced Bob Hanson won the money.

Guests were introduced as follows: Paul Miller had his mother and grandson with him. They are Patricia and Taylor Miller. Ed Branson had Brad Wright as his guest. Heidi Pankow introduced the Lt Governor of Key Club, Carolyn. Alan Teck was introduced by Guy Stephens.

Happy Bucks were donated by Heidi Pankow who said she is going to be a stay at home mom and go back to school in the fall. Mike Moran had a dollar because of the success of Pancake Day. Bob Burger put in money in honor of his daughters coming home for Father’s Day. Bruce Dwire also was happy because of Father’s Day and Orville Peterson was happy because he had a great Father’s Day at Lake Powell.

Herb Bacon introduced the program. It was Karen Levad the coordinator of the Mesa County Suicide Prevention Coalition. She said that Mesa County has a suicide rate of 21.7/ 100,000 people. This is double the national average. She and those associated with her are working to bring down those numbers.

Those celebrating Birthdays this week are Bruce Dwire, Peggy Page, Sandy Barger and Henry Langstaff. All but Peggy were present and told of a memorable birthday.

Fine Master Steve Thompson handed out fines to Bob Burger for being the only pancake flipper mentioned. He fined Dennis Durmas for wearing a shirt with a corporate logo on it as well as not bringing the beer tap to the picnic as quickly as Steve felt he should. Terry Wakefield’s table was fined for not women at the table. I do not know if that one was collected.

Last week I mistakenly said Roxie Denning had become a grandmother. I should have said Vikki Bell. I apologize to both of these fine Kiwanis members.

Randy Kirschbaum contributed to Country Jam tickets from Alpine Bank to be auctioned off and the money given to Pancake Days. A bid of $50.00 took the tickets. Don Teets auctioned them off.

Those with gifts for the president were Greg Schaefer who went and played the Pebble Beach Golf Course. He brought a ball back for President Mark. He also gave one to Lowell Shormann. Heidi Pankow had a gift from her recent trip to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. It was two bottles of ale/beer.

Orville Peterson was on a cruise recently and brought back a shot glass from St Thomas for the president.

President Mark announced there are earphones available for the hearing impaired and that he needs someone to sew the new patches on our banner.

Next week the program is about the Riverside Parkway. See you then.
