Kiwanis Weekly

May 27, 2004

There was a lot going on at Thursday’s meeting. It is JUCO time again! We were greeted by a very busy Gary Brown who was on duty alone. President Mark called the meeting to order with his bell which mysteriously reappeared. Don Teets provided the invocation.

Guests today were Chris Day, the official JUCO scorer who was introduced by Rick Nisley. Rick also introduced Manny Alvarez who is a visiting Kiwanian from New Jersey and a past district governor. Tom LaCroix brought Susan Eckert from his office. Heidi Waggoner brought her two young sons. Ed Branson grought Rick Stevenson as a guest for the final time as he was inducted later. He owns Lightning Quick Print and had his wife with him. Terry Wakefield brought Fred Nichols, who works for Home Loan. Fred was also inducted today and had his son Cooper with him. Kevin Price introduced Carolyn Foster with the Fruita Key Club. Carolyn is the Lt. Governor and received about $300 worth of help to get to their international convention, thanks to the Finemaster Steve Thompson.

Other guests today were our Lt.Governor Mike Doring who thanked the Aktion Club sponsors for their efforts to make the new club’s charter party a success. Bud Mantell, president of the Golden K was here as well.

Four members told about their memorable birthdays-Rich Emerson, Heidi Pancake..er, Pankow, Larry Beckner and Guy Stephens. Terry Wakefield and Bob Colony are celebrating anniversaries.

Pancake totals were announced by Heidi Pankow. We took in $2,640 today bringing us to $8,649 to date. We’re dong well but have a way to go. You need to reach the $300 level to be eligible for the grand prizes. The weekly prizes this week went to Heidi Waggoner, Jeff Feeland, Rick Stevenson, Rick Nisley and Allison Moore.

Amy Dyer made a request for silent auction items. Mark reminded us that it is best to get your donations turned in early so there is not so much work to be done at the last minute.

Lynne Sorlye reminded the club that membership drive is drawing to a close and we still need more new members. Also, there is a Community Fair that will be held at Mesa Mall on Saturday, June 12 from 10am to 3pm. A few volunteers are needed to man a table where we can hopefully sell Pancake tickets, tell visitors about our club and what we do and promote Camp Kiwanis use for the summer.

Our program today, of course, was JUCO. Some guy who thinks he’s the mayor, Bruce Hill, spoke about the work that goes into planning the tournament each year. Bruce introduced Jamie Hamilton, Chairman of the JUCO Tournament. Jamie gave us a preview of the banquet and the week’s schedule. The banquet speaker will be Bud Selig, the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.

Our club is sponsor of the team from Seward County College from Kansas. The picnic will be this Saturday, May 29, at Sherwood Park starting at 5pm. Brad Krebill has lined up food from Bennett’s BBQ and wants to remind everyone to attend. Please bring your own chairs.

Our thought for the day was provided by Ron Lappi. President Mark awarded the $5 to Carolyn with the Fruita Key Club to add to her convention fund.

Don’t miss next week’s program. Kiwanis Klues will provide a brief orientation for our new members and will test the knowledge of those not so new members.

A special thanks to Lynne Sorlye for doing this newsletter while I was on vacation.
