It was a very full day at Kiwanis this week. We
were greeted by Pete Jouflas and Heidi Waggoner. Jeannie led us in
"April Showers". Our joke of the day was from Pete Jouflas and was very
funny and in good taste!Guests were
Michele Heiser, brought by her daughter Allison Moore; Laurinda Conrad
and heather Callaway were guests of Andy Meanss; Heidi Pankow brought
Kathy Skiera and Roxie Denning brought Deb Kitzgerald. Guy Stephens
introduced Clark Wingate. Guy also brought Dave Kearsley who was
inducted today as was Ann Amelang, sponsored by Don Teets.
The Central High School Junior ROTC presented a
check for $302.25 which they raised to support the IDD (Iodine
Deficiency Disease) project that Kiwanis International initiated.
Among the Happy Bucks were Greg Schaefer who
returned President Mark’s bell which had been removed from the podium
only moments after being recovered from the last heist. Bruce Dwire was
happy that his daughters came to visit and then happier that they left
again. Finemaster Steve Thompson actually fined an inductee, Ann Amelang,
for conducting business during the meeting and Andy Means for wearing a
shirt with his high school alma mater’s logo.
The program was introduced by Bob Colony and
was a presentation by Jeff Wells of the Grand Junction Police Dept. He
spoke about drug activity in the area and how Crime Stoppers is
successful at making arrests based on tips from the public. They are
starting a program of adopting a local school and sponsoring a student
Crime Stoppers program in each of the Valley’s middle and high schools.
He asked our club to consider a school sponsorship and President Mark
said that the Board would certainly look at doing that.
In announcements:
Lynne Sorlye talked about membership drive and
pointed out that every club loses members due to members moving away or
changing jobs and that membership recruitment is vital to keeping the
club strong.
Bob Colony reported that Corporate sales are at
$15,000 already and that more are needed. He also reminded us that the
Golden K’s chili supper is Friday, April 30 at 6pm at the Redlands
Community Center.
Don Teets gave away tickets to the Mesa State
Baseball game for Friday night and asked everyone to come and help break
Mesa’s attendance record again.
Our thoughts are with Debra Pace who recently
had surgery and with Steve Katz, who has been hospitalized after a heart
attack.
I wish to thank Lynne Sorlye for writing the
newsletter this week. I was at my grandchildren’s graduations.
