I believe it must be close to Halloween as
there were these strangely dressed people at Kiwanis today. And
President Mike Moran was wearing some kind of a rubber mask that
made me think he came out of one of Stephen King’s novels.
Heidi Pankow and Heidi Waggoner were the
greeters today. Heidi Waggoner also had the thought for the day
and Heidi Pankow introduced our program. The program was conducted
by Dave Bailey. He brought pictures showing what evidence was
found to show if Alferd Packer killed all his companions as well
as ate them in the winter of 1874. The conclusion was he killed
only one in self-defense but he did eat the bodies to survive the
hard winter in the San Juan Mountains.
Pete Jouflas brought the joke of the day. It
had to do with golf terms. I guess if you are a golfer it made a
lot of sense.
Those celebrating birthdays this week are Rita
Crumpton and Chris Gumone. Those who have a Kiwanis anniversary
this week are Mike Moran (1997), Sue Kiser (1994) and Brad Krebill
(1994). Congratulations to all.
Guests today included several Rotary members
and the Central Key Club. Also Steve Yates who is the Central Key
Club sponsor. Heidi Pankow introduced the Key Club. They members
of Key Club then passed around bowls and asked for money to
support the UNICEF iodine program.
Other guests included: Max Smith brought by
Mike Moran; Tony Edgington introduced by Steve Thompson; Randy
Kirschbaum’s guest Eric Lusby; Amy Hand’s husband; Paul Bianca
brought by Gordon Harbert and Deb Fitzgerald who Roxie Denning had
as her guest.. Welcome to all.
Happy Bucks were given by Orville Boge because
of the dedication November 9 of the new Walter Walker Reception
Area; Bill Byers because CSU beat Wyoming; Bruce Dwire also had a
dollar to honor that game. Mike McDill put in a buck because his
daughter will be home this week-end. Dennis Durmas was happy
because of the snow on the mesa. Steve Katz put in a buck to tell
how Sheriff Stan Hilkey honored Steve’s son. Barbara Krause was
happy because she has sold the coffee shop at the airport and has
a new job. Tom Sheldon was happy due to Grand Junction’s victory
over Fruita.
President Mike presented certificates to some
of the Camp Committee people who were honored by Hilltop as home
town heroes who were not here last week. Hilltop will run the camp
next week and hopefully take it over permanently after that.
A coin flip was conducted between the Rotary
and Kiwanis to see when we will do the bell ringing for the
Salvation Army. Kim from Rotary called the coin and won the toss.
This was supervised by Mark Rose and Alfred Parker from the
Salvation Army. Rotary got to pick the time and they elected to
ring the bell in the morning of December 4. We will be out there
trying to get more money that Rotary from 12-2PM on that day. Mark
your calendars to help out.
Steve Thompson did his usual and fined several
people for miscellaneous infractions. He said he needed to get
$500 this year as that is what is in the budget. Mark Relph was
fined for hiring an out of town company to do the River project.
Bob Stratton was fined for some trumped up charge. Gordon Harbert
paid a buck as did Orville Boge and Bruce Dwire.
Bob Stratton reported there was a great turnout
for the work on the Habitat For Humanity house this past week-end.
He challenged both Kiwanis and Rotary to sponsor a house next
year.
Don’t forget the orientation for new members
and their sponsors will be the first Wednesday of November at the
Holiday Inn. Don Teets will conduct that training. If you have
someone you are planning to bring as a new member perhaps this
would be a good time to get them to one of these sessions.
The Golden K plans to have their Christmas
party December 15. Our club is invited. Be sure to put this on
your calendar.
Next week the Circle K Club from The Colorado
School of Mines will be bringing a program. Bruce Isaacson said
Gwen Woods and another person from that club will be here to tell
us about all their activities. They are a very dynamic club. You
won’t want to miss this. So see you then.
