Kiwanis Weekly

September 4, 2003

It was a busy day at Kiwanis today. In fact we may have set a record for time as the meeting was not over until 1:30. Perhaps the reason for all that time was because President Rick was trying to be sure he got all the gifts coming to him as president. He got four today. Greg Schaefer brought a gift from his trip to the Northwest and British Columbia. There was a windup crab, a bottle of hot sauces and a bottle of beer. Bill Byers brought a gift from his trip to California. A booklet, a ticket and some oranges were his gifts. Bruce Dwire also was traveling and brought back a little pig. Ken Willard had some a boxing glove.

Greeters today were Randy Kirschbaum and Ken Willard. The song of the day was This Is My Country. Orville Boge brought the prayer. The thought for the day was presented by Ken Willard. It had to do with being mentally ill. Randy Kirschbaum had the joke of the day. It had to do with a swearing parrot. There was no mystery greeter so the pot will be $10.00 next time.

Mark Relph introduced Mary Dunder as guest. She works at St Mary’s. She plans to join soon. Mike McDill had Kevin Price as his guest. He has completed an application for membership.

Happy bucks were given by Rita Hoback who was happy her daughter survived a auto accident and also became engaged. Bill Byers congratulated the CU fans for the football game win over his Alma Mater CSU. Bill Burger was also happy as he got to see that game on Saturday. Chris Gumone was happy as Wal-Mart has reimbursed him for time spent at Kiwanis. Ed Branson was happy because his third son got married. Larry Beckner had a buck to celebrate the release of land by the government that he had purchased some time ago. Finally Rick Nisley was happy because he got to wear his ugly red jacket another time.

The program was Steve DeFeyter from the Mesa County Health Department. He is the director of environmental health. He spoke about the East Nile Virus. He said it is carried by mosquitos and birds. Ken Willard introduced him.

Randy Rexwinkle, Bob Burger and Brad Krebill as well as Fred Aldrich celebrated birth days this week. Randy, Bob and Brad were here and told of an embarrassing moment..

Randy Rexwinkle, Larry Beckner and the D’Apontis were celebrating anniversaries this

week. Randy 31 years, Larry 32 years and D’Aponti’s 6 years.

Lynne Sorlye announced the Safety Walk is Wednesday September 17. Everyone is needed to help out that day. It is from 9 to 3 at Lincoln Park. If you have not signed up please e-mail Lynne at Lsorlye@holidayinngrandjct.com or call her at 254-3132.

Thea Chase reminded everyone that the Oktoberfest is coming up October 4. There are planning meetings each Friday at the Main street Bagels at 9AM. Also she said there will be a work day September 13 at Harbert Lumber. This will start at 9AM. Plan to come and help get the booth ready for the big day.

Rick Tuma and Don Teets are heading up a committee for the Red Crawford Scholarships. If you would like to be a part of this committee please contact one of them.

It was announced the financials will be posted on our web sight beginning in Mid September.

Also the vote for the changes in the Kiwanis Bi-laws will be next week.

President Rick was handing out fines or threatening to do so. The city employees were fined for our meeting being in the room of echos. Lynne Sorlye was given a bag of towels by Rick Nisley because Holiday Inn had declared an amnesty to those with Holiday Inn towels.

Ron Sherman was given an opportunity to say what he liked for the rest of Rick’s term as president for only $200.00. He declined.

Rich Emerson’s table had no women at it. They were fined a buck each for that problem. Don Teets table also had no women but Sue Kiser said she would join them if the price was right. The money raised went into the Kiwanis pot.

Brook Blaney had a shirt with a logo. As Steve Thompson pointed this out he was fined for ratting on Brook.

Brook Blaney and Ed Branson had raffle tickets to distribute for a fund raiser for Camp Kiwanis. Each Ticket is $100.00. The drawing is November 26th and you might win $2500, or $1000 or $500.

See you next week when the program is YWOTM.
