Kiwanis Weekly

September 25, 2003

Do you realize that with the induction today of Mary Dunder there has been 31 new members this year? What a great tribute to the people who make up the Grand Junction Kiwanis Club and to those who have taken the mantle of leadership this year. Thanks to Rick Nisley for making this a year to remember.

In fact the program today was by Rick Nisley and he did give us poetry to show the year just passing. He called it That Was The Year That Was. I will not try to put it into my newsletter but if you would like to review what he said Rick promised to post it on our web sight.

The greeters today were Debra Pace and Jim Moore. The song of the day was This Is My Country. Bill Byers lead the prayer. Orville Boge brought the thought for the day. It had to do with When Things Go Wrong. The Joke of the day was presented by Ken Willard. Mike Moran had time to bring us News, Weather and Sports. The mystery greeter was Heidi Pankow.

Guests included The Central High Key Club and their advisors. They were introduced by Heidi Pankow. Our club presented them with a new Key Club Banner. Their president Tara introduced some 10 other members and their two advisers. Tara mentioned some of the projects they have going in the next couple of months. They are meeting with a fourth grade class regularly and are recognizing a teacher of the month at Central. They are also doing a Bake Sale and A Walk For Life as well as helping with Oktoberfest and decorating a nursing home for Halloween. Right now they are looking for some help from Kiwanis members with 2X4's and plywood to help with their float. If you can help call Megan Penson at 523-9240.

Other guests today were Liz McKenney introduced by Vernon Grey and Ramona Richards brought by her sister Rita Crumpton. Ramona is Lt Governor of division 9.

Birthdays this week were celebrated by the following members, none of which were at club. Karen Rowe, Sam Suplizio, Sue Kiser, Richard Rogers and Mike Stahl all had birthdays this week.

Henry Langstaff and wife, Alice, are celebrating their 47th anniversary . Bob Hanson also has an anniversary this week and Joe Breman is just starting marriage this week.

The Children’s Safety Walk was yesterday. Lynne Sorlye announced there were some 480 kids attended. The Kiwanis members that helped were recognized and special thanks was given to the committee members. They included Lynne, Sue Kiser, Kristin Winn, LeAnn Zetmier, Denise Bagg, Tom Sheldon Mailyn D’Aponti and Maegan Monson. Thanks to all who helped out.

Thea Chase and Maegan Monson announced the sign-up for Oktoberfest is on the table. We need all the help we can get. It is scheduled for October 4. With set-up the night before. Be sure to add your name to those who are helping out.

Wes D’Aponti brought a gift back to the president from his trip to Alaska. He had a deck of cards and a cap.

The District Governor is scheduled for his annual visit to our division on October 29. It will be at the Redlands Community Center. The new Lt Governor is Mike Doring from the Golden K Club. Be sure to put this on your calendar.

Plan to be here next week as it will be induction of new officers. Let’s help Mark Relph get the new administrative year started right! See you then.
