Kiwanis Weekly

November 26, 2003

Today was the annual joint meeting with the Grand Junction Rotary Club. The main item of business was the coin toss to determine which one of the clubs will do the bell ringing for the Salvation Army in the morning and which in the afternoon. The Rotary Club won the toss and elected to go in the morning.

President Mark Relph challenged President Wallid of the Rotary that the club with the largest percentage of increase in earnings from last year would win. That means if we win The Rotary Board will serve us at a regular meeting but if they win our board will serve the Rotary at their regular meeting.

All members of both clubs that were not wearing their pins were fined $1.00 each. This money is to be given to the Salvation Army.

The program was presented by the Salvation Army. Captain Dave Pollick told of the work of the Salvation Army and presented a slide show. He said the Salvation Army is a world wide organization. He said they were founded in London in 1865. Locally the annual budget is $2,032,300. That money comes from many sources including the donations from Kiwanis and Rotary. They work to provide food for needy people. They have a program to help those who are hooked with alcohol and drugs. The statistics indicate that in the last three years the success rate is over 60 percent.

Some 3000 kids receive Christmas gifts because of the efforts of the Salvation Army and some 350 families receive Thanksgiving dinners from them and many have visits from members of the Salvation Army. All in all it is a worthwhile charity.

The meeting was called to order by the president of Rotary. The songs of the day were God Bless America and Let There Be Peace. David Durham, Terry Wakefield and Dan Roberts lead the singing accompanied by Jeanne Thomas on the piano.

Kiwanis guests included Lindsey Byers who was with her father Bill. Terry Wakefield was accompanied by his grandson Cody. There were several Rotary guests.

Rotary presented a check to The Rocky Mountain Elementary School of $3000.00. The money is to be used to help buy equipment.

The Raffle for the benefit of Camp Kiwanis was conducted by Ed Branson. He said there were some 180 tickets sold. The winners of the drawing were Larry Schultz for third place. He won $500.00. Earl Bennett won $1000.00 for second place and the first prize winner was Amy Dyer. The remaining proceeds will help to fund Camp Kiwanis in the year 2004.

Happy bucks were given by several Rotary members and the following Kiwanis members.

Marilee Wood had a buck because today is her son’s 12th birthday. Larry Beckner gave a buck to thank Clarence Ross for the good job he did with the football playoff. Bill Byers contributed a dollar because Fruita Monument is still in the hunt for the State Football Championship. Mark Relph have a buck on behalf of Rick Nisley because he said he wants Colorado to beat Nebraska so Nebraska will get a different coach. Terry Wakefield had a buck to recognized the good job his grandson Cody did at Scenic Elementary to raise money for the kids in need. Finally Brook Blaney gave a buck in recognition of the good job a local young person did in Boxing.

Be sure to plan to attend next week at our regular time and place.

The Training session for new members and their sponsors is December 4 at 5:15 PM at the Holiday Inn. Past President, Bruce Hill will be conducting the session. All new members and their sponsors are encouraged to come.
