Kiwanis Weekly

October 2, 2003

Our new president Mark Relph got off to a good start today. He started on time and ended on time and learned a valuable lesson. Do Not lose the bell!!. The bell disappeared before he could call the meeting to order. So he did so with out the bell. Later past President Rich Emerson had all the past presidents vote to fine our new president $5.00 for losing the bell. He was then told where it was located and was able to close on time with the bell at his side.

The greeters today were Ken Willard and Randy Rexwinkle. The thought for the day was brought by Ken Willard. It had to do with not being able to buy happiness. Bill Byers brought the prayer and the song of the day was This Land Is Your Land. The Joke of the day was told by Clarence Ross. The mystery greeter was Mark Fugere. He chose Don Teets to win the pot.

We had inter-clubs with both the Central and the Fruita Key Clubs. There were 5 from Central. Their president Tara presented our club with a big thank you card for giving them a new banner. There were seven from the Fruita Key Club including their sponsors. Their president is Kelli and the Lt Governor is Carolyn. They received their banner today from our club. The Key clubs will be helping out this week-end at Oktoberfest.

As you no doubt know October 4th is Oktoberfest. We will be setting up our booth tomorrow afternoon at the parking lot at 3rd and Main. Be sure to plan to help out. If you have not signed up contact Maegan Monson at Studio 12 now. Thea Chase and Maegan asked at club today for more people to come help later in the day. The needs between 5 and 7PM are especially critical.

Guests today besides the Key clubs were Maegan Monson’s mother Mary Preust (sp) and Lloyd Wright who was a guest of Mike Moran. Heidi Waggoner had a guest but I was not able to catch her name. Lowell Shormann also introduced his wife Judy even though she was part of the program. Judy is a past member of our club.

This week is when Gordon Harbert celebrates his birthday. He was not there so we did not sing happy birthday to him.

The speakers were introduced by Mark Fugere. They were Kay Hotsenplier and Judy Shormann. They were talking about Domestic Violence. They said there are hundreds killed each year as a result of the abuse. There are billions of dollars spent or lost because of it. It seems to be pervasive in our society. Kids raised in an abusive atmosphere tend to repeat it in their own domestic situations. There seems to be lots of problems and few solutions.

Happy bucks were contributed by Clarence Ross because he was able to make it to club today, by Jeff Cyriaks because we have a new president, Mark Relph because there was no red coat at the podium, by Orville Boge because Mesa State football won last week-end, by Lowell Shormann because the round-about by Two Rivers was being torn up and The Fruita Key Club gave a buck because they were happy to be here to receive their banner.

On October 16 the club will meet at the Hampton Inn because there is a prior commitment at Two Rivers.

Rick Nisley was taking pictures for the membership directory. If you have not had your picture taken contact Rick.

Mike Moran brought News, Weather and Sports. We closed on time and if fact Rick Nisley gave a buck because this was the earliest close in a year.
