Kiwanis Weekly

September 5, 2002

The greeters today were Maurice Henscheid and Gary Brown. President Lois called the meeting to order and we sang This Is My Country. Bill Byers lead the prayer. Denise Bagg brought the thought for the day. Debra Pace won the money.

It was good to see Ron Sherman here today. He has moved to Oklahoma but says he thinks he understands why no one does that. He was a guest of Greg Schaefer. Steve Stranger had Kim Smith with him. She works at his business and has a chocolate shop.

Pam Nicholls introduced Harry Hagerman as her guest. Harry is a retired Marine Corps general. He was promoting the Western Slope Vietnam veterans memorial. He said some $350,000 is needed to erect it and already $100,000 has been raised. He also talked about the 9-11 Commemoration Ceremony. He said it will be at 7:00 AM on the 11th at Suplizio Field. There will be a flag raising and patriotic music as well as a fly over by f-16 jets. Attend if you can.

The program was the awarding of the UTEC Scholarships. These scholarships were funded by the late Red Crawford. 6 scholarships were given out this year to needy students. Four of them were in attendance. The speaker was Kerry Youngblood. Those receiving scholarships were Matthew Alvarez, Michael Scott, Mike Manley, Dustin Delore, Geno Mazza and Mike Hodges. Matthew and Michael were unable to attend but the others were here at club to receive their awards.

It really was Bob Burger’s birthday this week. He along with Brad Krebill and Fred Aldrich were celebrating birthdays this week.

Stan Hilkey, Marilee Woods and Greg Hancock were fined for not having their Kiwanis pins in evidence when they made the news this week.

Mike Moran brought News Weather and Sports. His topics were mostly politics and football. Must be the time of the year!

Do Not forget the Safety Walk coming up on September 10. Sue Kiser was looking for help so plan to attend and help out. There was a short ad, as prepared by KJCT, showing the highlights of the walk. If you have not signed up check with Sue and see when you are needed.

Bruce Dwire mentioned Oktoberfest is coming up 10/5. It will be at 3rd and Main. There will be sign-up sheets in the near future.

Don Teets announced an organizational meeting for a Golden K Club. Golden K is mostly for retirees who would like to meet in the mid morning. The organizational meeting is scheduled for September 10 at Redlands Community Center at 9:00 AM. There will be several dignitaries from Kiwanis there. If you know anyone who might be interested have them come to that meeting.. In order to make this a success they need at least 20 people to sign up to be a part of the club.

President Lois Becker announced we received thank you notes from several of the recipients from last week’s allocations. She also said Amy Hutmacher from Fruita Key club sent a thank you.

Next week the vote for Camp Kiwanis will be the topic of the day. Plan to attend.

Rick Nisley announced he is updating the directory. If you have not please make changes to any address or phone numbers that need changed. He passed around sheets this week and will be doing so again next week.

It was good to see Steve Thompson at club even though he was wearing Gordon Harbert’s dinner badge. He said he told the club his was missing last time he was here so the fine that was assessed will be paid by our president.

Don’t forget color Sunday on the 29th of September. Drop by the Kiwanis Camp for ice cream and treats.
