Kiwanis Weekly

November 27, 2002

It was time for our joint meeting with the Rotary Club. As I looked around the room it appeared several of their people must have gone to the hairdresser as they all did not have grey hair! President Rich was there in his red jacket. He was mistaken for the porter from Amtrak.

Michael Burke, the president of the Rotary club, called the meeting to order. A devotional and prayer was offered by Helen Hausen. The song of the day was America, the Beautiful. That was followed by a Rock and Roll Medley lead by David Durham. He enlisted a couple of Rotarians and two of the Kiwanis members, Bill Byers and Dwayne Jackson, to assist him. It was sung in 4 parts so at one time there were four different sets of words being sung at the same time. All good fun.

Orville Peterson introduced his guest, Michael Temple, who is a new doctor at St Mary’s. There were several Rotary guests but I did not try to keep track of them.

Even though Sheriff elect, Stan Hilkey and Mark Relph were at the head table with Rick Nisley they were unable to keep him from lifting the Rotary gavel. Rick, however returned it before we were done.

The Grand Junction High School Ensemble and the Westwinds were the entertainment (program). They sang several contemporary Christmas songs and a few other songs. All in all they did a very good job. They announced they are planning to have 3 days of music. December 5-7. For more information call the Grand Junction High School.

We lost the coin flip to determine when we would ring the Salvation Army bells. Rotary was given the choice and will ring in the morning of December 14. We will be out in the afternoon. Plan to help out. We also will kick that off at our regular meeting December 12. Bring your money.

Happy bucks were given by several Rotarians and the following Kiwanis members. The money collected was to go to the Salvation Army. One of the things mentioned was the excellent article about service clubs that was in the Daily Sentinel this past week. Gordon Harbert said he felt good when he looked at the "old" people in Rotary. Orville Peterson was happy because his church had burned their mortgage the night before. Bruce Hill is running for City Counsel. One of the Rotarians was happy because Dwayne Jackson came along and helped him when his car stalled some 40 years ago. Orville Boge was happy because he had won a Poinsettia at Johnson’s House of Flowers.

Mark Relph was happy because Rick Nisley’s red coat will not be passed on to the next president.

President Rick fined Brook Blaney for advertising on his shirt.

The Rotary Club was invited to come to our meeting on December 26.

Next week’s program is Steve Hagerman and the Turkish Outreach Missionary (Muslim). Plan to attend this interesting program. See You then.
