Today was Charter luncheon day. There were a few guests and lots of
remembrances. Did you know for example that this club was started
February 17, 1937. The sponsoring club was the Price, Utah, Kiwanis
club? They came the 150 miles or more to get us started. That was of
course before 1-70 was built.
Don Teets gave a brief history of the club and the
events we have and when they were started. Here are some of the
significant things done by the club. Camp Kiwanis was founded in 1947.
Pancake days was started in the 1960's. The club has had three Governors
of the Rocky Mountain District. They are Vic Colony, Red Crawford and
Bob Colony. Bob is still with the club and in fact received his perfect
attendance pin for 38 years of attendance. Wow!
The Rocky Mountain District consists of some 5000
members. Our Club has about 120 members and has been from a low of 88 to
about 150 in the past several years.
Other memorable things concerning the club include
Oktoberfest which was first a project of the Bookcliff Kiwanis Club. It
was brought to this club when Bookcliff closed in 1987. The Gum ball
machines have been in existence for a number of years. The Young
Children Priority One was adopted some 12 years ago. It is the aim of
that to help children from -9months to 5 years. A couple of items
especially for young children is the Resource Directory and the River
Front Safety Walk.. Iodine Deficiency (IDD) has been a project of
Kiwanis International and has raised some seventy-five Million Dollars.
Other projects include the Red Crawford Scholarship
fund for electronics and the Key Clubs.
President Elect Rick Nisley conducted the meeting
today. The Greeters were Bruce Dwire and Ken Maher. Giselle Smith lead
the prayer and the song of the day was When Irish Eyes Are Smiling..
Mike Moran brought the News Weather and Sports. Giselle Smith brought
the thought for the day and no one won the drawing.
Vicki Boutilier is celebrating her birthday this
week.
Pete Jouflas and Jackie Chappell-Reid introduced the
Citizen of the year. This year one of our own was chosen. Bill Byers was
honored for all his good work in the community. Bill said he thanked his
father for the inspiration he was to him.
Guests today included Bill Byers wife Retha. Others
with guests to day were Bob Colony’s wife and Bob Hanson’s wife. Greg
Schaefer has his wife with him and also Stan Hilke. Randy Rexwinkle had
as his guest Chuck Brenner who is a past president of the Glenwood
Springs Kiwanis Club.
The Central Key Club is still looking for a driver to
take them to convention on March 22-24. If you would like to help out
call Bruce Dwire or Maurice Henscheid.
There are two vacancies on the Club Board. Today Mike
Moran and Randy Rexwinkle were nominated along with Marilee Langfitt-Wood.
The vote will be next week. If you would like to be nominated talk with
Chuck Wanebo.
Lois Becker said governor Don Baker sent his
congratulations to the club for their 65 years.
Those honored for perfect attendance were as follows:
1 year- Stephen Castor, Michele Heiser, Michael McDill, Mike Moran, Mark
Relph, Randy Rexwinkle and Mark Rose. Larry Beckner also received that
honor but he said he has many more years of perfect attendance. Actually
you do not start over if you miss a year of perfect attendance but
rather it is added on to previous years. The 2 year pin was given to
Maurice Henscheid, Brad
Krebill, Marilee Langfitt-Wood, Giselle Smith and
Kristin Winn. 3 Year pins were given to Bob Hanson, Pam Nicholls and
LeAnn Zetmier. 4 year pins were awarded to Lois Becker, Bill Byers, Jeff
Cyriaks and Rick Nisley. A 5 year pin was presented to Rich Emerson.
Henry Langstaff and Chuck Wanebo received 6 year pins. Velma Bilger and
Roger Martin got 7 year pins. 8 year pins were received by Don Fifield,
Bud Mantell, Jim Moore and Ollie Wafer. Jeff Gumone received a 9 year
pin. Orville Boge got 11 year award. Wally Bissinger received 13 years.
Bob Burger has 14 years of perfect attendance while Don Teets has 15 and
Gary Brown 16 years. As already mentioned Bob Colony has 38 years of
perfect attendance
Chuck Wanebo also received his Past President Pin.
