Kiwanis Weekly

June 27, 2002

DO NOT FORGET NEXT WEEK , JULY 4, 2002 THERE IS NO MEETING. We will see you on the 11th for our unusual meeting at the usual time and place. Come and see what the program is as none has been announced.

This week the program was Mark Scofield and Larry ____________ representing the Mesa County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Sue Kiser introduced them. Mark said the #2 cause of injury in young people behind car accidents was attempted suicide. Mesa county has the 4th largest number of suicide attempts per capita in the State of Colorado. After several questions and answers the program was completed.

Greeters today were Earl Jensen and Terry Wakefield. President Lois Becker called the meeting to order after which we sang You’re a Grand Old Flag. Daryl Pridy lead the prayer and then we did the pledge. It included the forbidden words (according to some strange Judges) under God.

Guests today included Jeff Freeland brought by Jackie Chappell-Reid, Scot Stewart introduced by Thea Chase and Beverly Dwire who was a guest of her husband Bruce. Welcome to all.

Bob Stratton was honored for his and his wife’s activities as Volunteers in the community. In case you missed it he was on the television. In the article Kiwanis was not mentioned so he was not fined. Congratulations Bob.

There were several birthdays being celebrated this week. They included Peggy Page, Henry Langstaff, Bob Hanson, Michelle Smith, roger Martin and Daryl Mattivi. If you were not there you missed having Happy Birthday sang to you.

Bill Kistler brought the thoughts for the day. He said among other things to give God what is right rather than what is left.

Allison Shain won the drawing but as she was not present the pot will grow next week.

Pam Nicholls announced the District Convention plans are progressing. Do not forget the interclub luncheon as the two Key Club Scholarships will be handed out at the meeting. Also it will replace the regular meeting that week in August. More on this in the coming weeks. If you plan to attend any of the meetings you will need to send in a registration to district.

There is an opening on the board of directors. Only one person has been nominated. That is Randy Kirschbaum. We will vote, rubber stamp, the filling of the vacancy on July 11.

Rick Nisley attended the International Convention this past week. He was supposed to be accompanied by Steve Stranger but Steve was unable to attend for medical reasons so Rick went by himself. He said he had a great time in New Orleans and had to ask his banker to send more money. He said the new Governor is named Torres and is from the Philippines. Rick mentioned the one thing he learned was that life is like a roll of paper. The closed to the end it gets the faster it goes.

Rick also said two amendments were passed. They were: Occupation is not required on an application for membership and that membership is open to all over 18 years of age.

Heidi Pankow brought a gift to the president. It was a Lion King Magnet. She said her family attended the play, The Lion King.

Bill Byers also said he had been traveling and brought gifts to the president. He said he had been to Sante Fe, Oregon and Southern California. He brought ticket stubs, soap and lotion and a cup of sand from the beach in California.

Rick Nisley brought back several gifts to the president from his trip to New Orleans. They included a picture of soap, a mask, and a bracelet with the wrong name on it.

It was a great meeting. We will see you in two weeks. Henry Langstaff - bulletin editor
