Kiwanis Weekly

February 7, 2002

Well, we were back to Two Rivers today. The meal was good if you like barbequed beans and beef brisket. We had a round table discussion on the Kiwanis Camp. At least we were all back at the round tables. More on the discussion later.

The greeters today were Ted Sparn and Doug Baute. The song of the day was Heart of my Heart and the prayer was handled by Don Teets. President Elect Rick Nisley lead the meeting in the absence of President Lois.

Bill Byers brought the thoughts for the day. He said he was filling in for Alan Friedman as Alan had to leave early. Bill said we should do the right thing today because of tomorrow. He also said something about Love and that it was worth while.

Giselle Smith won the $15.00. I am sorry I typed Doug Baute’s name wrong for last weeks name drawn. He was not here then and so he did not win the money.

Guests today included Gary Brown’s "trophy" wife and Alan Friedman’s wife. Bruce Isaacson had his wife Aldean with him. Bruce said he was celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary tomorrow and is having an open house at Redlands Community Center next Sunday, February 10, at 2PM to 4PM. Everyone is invited to attend. Congratulations Bruce and Aldean!! Kristin Winn had her Carli with her. Carli is an intern with the city and helped with the Olympic torch run.

The vote relating to the Camp Kiwanis is to be February 21 rather than the 14th as previously announced. The club voted to postpone the vote on a motion made by Don Fifield.

It was good to see Earl Payne back with us today. Also it was nice to have Bruce Hill back for another meeting this year.

Mike McDill conducted a lengthy discussion relating to Camp Kiwanis. Several people got up and spoke both pro and con for the continuing use of the Camp. I will not try to cover what was said but there are several things on the Internet concerning this. The address for our home page on the internet is www.kiwanis-gj.org It appears that feelings are running very deep about this. I hope this issue does not cause a split in the club. I am sure you feel the same way.

Birthday people this week and next were Steve Castor this week and Velma Bilger, Jim Schneider, and Brook Blaney next week. Happy Birthday to all.

Amy Dyer was inducted into club today. Rich Emerson lead the induction. Bruce Dwire was her sponsor. Amy and her husband John build custom homes and do remodeling. She stated they have three children. The youngest is a student at Fruita Monument. Amy was born in Boulder but has spent most of her life here in Grand Junction. Be sure to welcome Amy into the club.

Every second Tuesday of the month Don Teets conducts an orientation for new members and their sponsors at his office located in the Bank of Grand Junction office. He is located on the second floor. The time for the meeting is 5:15PM. Come through the alley.
