Kiwanis Weekly

December 5, 2002

President Rick Nisley called the meeting to order by beating the gavel on a baked potato. He seemed to have misplaced the bell. As it turned out it was under one of the many Christmas Trees in the room. That was not disclosed to him until near the end of the meeting.

Bob Colony and Terry Wakefield were the greeters today. The prayer was brought by Terry Wakefield. We started to sing Jingle Bells but Larry Beckner jumped to his feet and insisted we sing the CU Fight Song. There were also placards with CU logos and a gold jacket for NU supporter president Rick to wear throughout the meeting. Some Fun!!

Guests today included Dwayne Jackson’s Grandson Aaron Bray as well as Ted Martin introduced by Randy Kirschbaum. Ron Lappi had City employee Aletha Sebastian and Jeff Gumone reintroduced former Kiwanis member Joe Haney.

Last week I made an error about Orville Peterson’s guest Michael Temple. I said he is a new doctor in town but it is his wife that is the new doctor. Sorry about that.

Tomorrow, Saturday the 7th is the Kiwanis Christmas Party at Tiara Rado. If you are planning to attend you need to pay your $25.00 at the door or before. The club will not bill for that. It is good to see that Bruce Dwire is getting the club financial business up to date. Be sure to thank him the next time you see him for all his hard work.

The joke of the day was brought by Martiey Miller. She had several zingers about Nebraska students and alumni.

Mike Moran brought News Weather and Sports. Among other subjects he brought up Bill Byers work with UTEC.

The speaker today was Steve Hagerman. He was introduced by Dwayne Jackson. Steve’s subject was Islam and the basic beliefs and tenants of that religion and how they are different from the beliefs of Christianity. He said the subject is usually covered by a several day seminar. He told us about it in about 15 minutes so obviously it was very condensed.

Heidi Pankow brought the thought for the day. It was about saving the starfish.

The drawing was given to Larry Beckner because he stood up as the biggest CU fan.

Scot Heron and Don Teets were celebrating birthdays this week. They were asked about their most embarrassing moment. Scot said his was too embarrassing and Don said he did not get embarrassed. Others who had birthdays this week are Stan Hilkey, Doug Baute and Louis Shirlen. As they were not here they did not get to hear Happy Birthday sung to them.

Happy Bucks were contributed by Jeff Cyriaks, Orville Peterson, Mark Relph and Bill Byers.

Bruce Dwire was fined because his new business made the news. It is called Value Enhancement Group. There was one table with all men. President Rick was going to fine them all $1.00 but then decided to fine Rick Tuma $5.00 instead. Larry Beckner ended up paying the fine even though he was not even at that table.

Heidi Pankow had a gift for the president. She went all the way to Price, Utah and brought back a dinosaur track. Lynne Sorlye had a gift from her recent trip to San Diego and Las Vegas. She brought back a coffee mug and a shot glass and a deck of cards.

Mike Moran went to North Carolina and brought back a shot glass with the Tar Heals Logo on it. President Rick, do you suppose people think you drink?

Next week is the kick-off for Salvation Army Bell Ringing. Plan to attend and help with this worthwhile cause. See you then.
