President Lois Becker called the meeting to order.
The prayer was offered by Terry Wakefield and the song of the day was
God Bless America.Guests today besides
those there to receive allocations were Scott Haren introduced by
Jacquie Chappell-Reid, Bruce Rowe brought by Ron Lappi and Larry Wallace
who Guy Stephens had with him.
Sue Kiser announced the Safety Walk is coming
up on September 10. It is not on the new calendar but plan to help out.
Many people are needed in order to make this a success.
President Lois said to be sure to mark your
calendars for Oktoberfest which will be October 5. It is our second
major fund raiser and everyone is needed. Plan to set some time aside
for this.
Do not forget the vote on Camp Kiwanis is
coming up September 12. If you have questions you must get them in by
the 3rd. I am sure you all received a letter concerning this
important vote.
Ed Kuechler, Clarence Ross and Eric Lusby are
all celebrating birthdays this week. Happy Birthday to all of you.
Ken Willard brought a gift back to the
president from his recent trip to Seattle, WA. He had a shirt from the
Boeing Volunteers.
Bob Stratton brought a gift from his vacation
to Glacier National Park. It was some chocolate covered Huckleberries.
Orville Boge brought back from his trip to see
the Colorado Rockies play baseball a score card and a souvenir pencil.
He won the trip in a drawing for those who sold the most Kiwanis Pancake
Day tickets.
Clarence Ross announced this week-end starts
the football and soccer seasons at Mesa College. Come out and support
our local college.
The program today was Allocations. Giselle
Smith was in charge assisted by Terry Wakefield and Nancy Freedman.
Others on the allocation committee were Maurice Henscheid and Steve
Stranger.
There were some 26 organizations given money
from the Kiwanis Club. They were as follows: Adoption Alliance who helps
will all sorts of adoptions, CASA of Mesa County, who oversee children
removed from their homes because of abuse; Colorado West Mental Health,
child family division, Pathwalker program: Colorado West Mental Health,
Suicide prevention coalition; Community Food Bank; Desert Edge Therapy
who use horses for therapy; First Book of Mesa County; Girls on the Run;
Girl Scout Chipeta Council; Grand Valley Catholic Outreach children’s
corner; Hill Top Resource Center, kiddin around east; Holy Family
Catholic School, school nurse and after school program; Hospice and
Palliative Care for youth service and child team program; Kids Voting
program; Marillac Clinic Dental Health; Mesa Developmental Services,
Building block program; Performing Arts Conservatory, live theater to
western Colorado and training for youths scholarship;
Partners, 1 on 1 mentoring program. This was
accepted by our own Kiwanis member Joe Higgins.
Others receiving allocations were Parents as
Primary Teachers which provides clothing for needy children; Strong
Family, Safe Kids which supplies snugglies for young mothers; Tope
Elementary School crossing program; Very Special
Arts for the art festival for children; Western
Colorado Boy Scouts of America; Western Colorado Math and Science Center
and finally Western Slope Center for Children which helps sexually
abused children.
Plan to attend next week when the program is
UTEC Scholarship recipients. Be sure to attend.
