Kiwanis Weekly

April 25, 2002

The good news is the sound system worked fine today. President Lois Becker called the meeting together and thanked the greeters, Steve Caster and Stephanie Tuin for their good work. The prayer was brought by Allison Shain and the song of the day was God Bless America.

Jeanne Thomas was not here to play the piano so Dennis Woodbridge filled in. Thanks, Dennis.

Guests today included Craig Overfield introduced by Marilee Wood, Tanya Pappas brought by Steve Stranger, Chris Gillespie who was a guest of Kristin Winn and Mike Moran had as his guest today Paul Vareche (sp) and Mike Gooch and Debra Tomlinson from KKCO TV.

Rich Emerson, Janet Rowland, Larry Beckner and Mark Relph were fined for being in the news and not mentioning Kiwanis. Of course some of the reasons for being in the news may not be good publicity for Kiwanis. Keep your eye on the blotter.

Mike Moran and his station were honored by our speaker today for their preparation of a PSA (public service announcement) for the Men Against Violence. In fact this cost Mike $25.00. So much for publicity, huh.

Rick Nisley was selling shirts for all to wear. If you did not sign up to get a shirt to wear on Pancake Day and at the convention this summer call Rick to let him know which one you want.

Our speakers today were introduced by Eleanor Walker. Con Pyle, Don , Melinda and Seth were here talking about the program to prevent domestic violence. They asked us all to speak out against violence. If you would like to help out, or offer support, suggestions call Con Pyle at 242-2422 or Melinda Wilson at 242-3703.

Birthdays this week are being celebrated by Stephanie Tuin and Coleen Arnold. Happy birthday to you.

The thoughts for the day were brought by Bob Hanson. He had several humorous thoughts mostly about government.

Ollie Wafer won the money. In fact he got $10.00 for this week and last.

The membership push is still in full swing. If you have a prospective member and would like to bring him or her to a meeting now is a good time as you will not have to pay for their meal. Also the fee for joining is reduced to $25.00 until May 16. Mike Moran is in charge of the membership committee and is being assisted by Heidi Pankow. Heidi suggested we consider those we know at other organizations we are involved in.

Nancy Friedman has been approved for membership and will be inducted May 16.

Rick Nisley announced the tickets and planning for Pancake days is coming along. In fact next week is pancake day kick-off.. Bob Colony said they are looking for help with Corporate sales. If you know of some company that may be a good prospect let Bob know.

Jeff Gumone is looking for people to fill his softball team. Call Jeff if you would like to play.

The District Convention is coming along and there is a schedule in this months Rocky Mountain Kiwanis Paper. Bill Kistler will be writing articles in the next three newspapers promoting the convention and Grand Junction.

President Lois had 2 thank you notes she mentioned today. One from the Knowledge bowl promoters and one from the Central High Key Club.

It was pointed out by Earl Payne, at the urging of Rich Emerson, that the new calendar does not mention Mothers Day. How will we keep Johnson’s House of Flowers in business if we don’t celebrate Mothers Day?
